Subtleamuzement
Hey all I just picked up a 98 outback and I am stoked. But there is a little grind going into 3rd gear. The old owner said a new clutch was installed not to long ago and it just needs to be adjusted. Does this sound legit?
ehsnils
Moved to appropriate area. How many miles on the car? Assuming it's a 5MT you have. Change the gearbox oil first - it's easy to do. If the problem persists I suspect that the gearbox synchronizers are worn on 3rd gear. Depending on how the clutch was replaced it may have been filled with the wrong oil. (you can either lift the engine or drop the gearbox when replacing clutch and when you drop gearbox there will be an oil leak from the rear driveshaft.) If the clutch otherwise feels OK you should be good.
Subtleamuzement
Thanks for moving it to the right thread. Well it is a 5MT. I will do these things and report back. Thanks.
Subtleamuzement
Also, you said when you drop the gearbox "there will be a leak", does this leak happen no matter what or can this leak be stopped?
overspool
It's only when you're replacing the clutch and you lower the transmission down. When changing the fluid you don't need to worry about it. I am going to go ahead and say that most likely your 3rd gear synchro is going bad, because 4th gear is the one that gets oil last. If 4th gear was grinding a little, then it would be more likely that it was a gear oil problem. also, adjusting the clutch should affect all gears, and not just one. Subtleamuzement
Thanks for the insight. I wasn't going to adjust the clutch after I thought about it for a day or so, it just didn't make sense. I was thinking about replacing the oil with the Extra-S but what you are saying about the synchro does make sense. So I don't want to spend $80 on the S-oil and have to drain it soon after. Well I will keep researching and see what I come up with. I wont be around the car for a few more days so I can't test anything.

megzuri
Hi People I want to ask you about the self-diagnostics of 98 Legacy GT transmission! well first of all I want to ask to a topic author if he ever did the transmission self diagnostic procedure? and guys does anybody of you have ever done the transmission selfdiagnostics? out of 14 needed operations to get a transmission trouble code is to drive the veficle for more then 20km/h speeds that 12-14 mp/h this procedure seems ambiguous to me! rest 13 are clear and succinct e.g. move the lever from 1 to 2 and turn the ignition on and off sort of things.. I tried the 14 staged procedure to get a trouvble code from transmission but I failed! I drived the vehicle up to 80 miles, getting to it with an open throttle! do you guys have any idea how the vehicle should be driven when one is performing that 14 stage transmission diagnostic test?
