Oil pan gasket???

ThreeBond is what Subaru uses, HondaBond is the same stuff if you're closer to a Honda dealership, FugiBond is known to work well and so are Permatex products. The key is in the prep. Make sure all surfaces are CLEAN and let it set up 24 hours before adding oil or starting if you can and you'll have no leaks.

+1 what he said.

 

but you don't need to remove the pan. they do not leak unless some one has removed already.

 

if you think yours is leaking, you are probably wrong. they don't leak.

 

the oil pumps in the front leask and the oil separator plate on the back of the block behind the flywheel / flex plate do leak.

 

don't waste your time (or money) with the oil pan.

 

what is wrong with your engine???

^ very often true. I've seen a couple pans leaking, but they lived tough lives, lol. Cam seals, crank seals, seperator plate, & pump too. I've even seen a few instances where the wrist pin plugs were not completely tight and leaking some. All of these areas (usually) will make thier way down to the pan. So to concur with johnegg, do some good detective work before poping that pan off.

Too late, I already tore into it, the previous owner took the car to a subaru specialist and had the HG done and it looks like the oil pan resealed.

 

The car was leaking a half a quart oil every couple tanks of fuel. Half the screws were loose and it looks like someone tried to reseal the pan while in the car. There were a couple hex head bolts on the back of the pan instead of the phillips head ones.

 

I have the engine out now doing the other HG and a timing belt plus seals, I replaced the cam seals, the rear main seal looks dry along with the two plates on the back of the engine behind the flexplate. the oil pump appeared dry so I am praying the oilpan was the culprit. I used permatex silicone and made sure everything was scrubbed clean via the wiz wheel and a bit of solvent.

 

I'm thinking I should of resealed the oil pump but the engine is back in the car now and if I only leak a quart every 4 or 5 tanks of fuel I'll be fine with that.

Does the oil seperator issue apply to 05 turbo LGT motors?

no. they started using a quality part that holds up much better. (don't know when but some tyime during the 00 - 04 years.)

 

but i would check it if the engine is out and if it is leaking, just reseal it.

 

my 01 at 105k was dry.

When I rebuilt the engine in our 99 everything that could be leaking oil was leaking, including the oil pan, so I wouldn't doubt it as a possibility. I used the permatex grey from advance auto because it is MUCH cheaper than fujibond. 7k after the rebuild and there are no leaks to be found anywhere.

either someone really got into that pan or if it was a speaicialty shop they just had a couple extra laying about.

 

your oil pick up has hex heads and not philips like the pan and windage tray but they are all still 10mm and same length, so maybe they just threw all the bolts together.
