Weird clunk on rear suspension

I have developed a weird clunk on the rear right suspension. It is a low level clunk almost like when driving over a pothole except that it can be almost any road imperfection. Hard to give a perfect description of the noise except that it developed after I had my brakes worked on (cleaning out the sliding mechanism).

It is annoying for sure, especially to my OCD mind, but probably safe. I took the wheel off and rechecked the bolts. All good. Then I took a wrench and deep sockets and I started playing with the strut assemblies. I did do some tightening on the front (3), even barely perceptible to the rear (2). But I also "tried" to tighten the strut nuts (useless, i know because you need an Allen key to keep the strut shaft from rotating at the same time as the nut) but you know what...on the right rear where the noise was...the strut nut was tight, locked in fact. I was able to untighten it, but I wonder how that could have happened ?

I had checked the strut for leaks and from the outside, there was no visible "oil" or "stains". The struts are new (KYB GR-2), less than 10 months old. So I wonder if I have to change that one strut. Ride height is equal on both left and right rear (measured as gap to the fender); it is not any more bouncy. When I did my struts I had everything new installed within the struts assembly and I did torque everything with a torque wrench according to specs. Does anyone have more diagnosis / repair suggestions ? Thanks.

Summary:

Item # 3 in the picture, the nut, on the rear right side, was found tightened. There is a clunking noise on the right rear. Could the two be related ? Why would the nut be tight in the absence of an Allen key to counter the rotation of the shaft ?

If the nut is tight then like people have said, check your endlinks, make sure nothing is hitting the sway bar or exhaust. If it sounds like a bobble noise there is a chance that you got a bad strut. I've seen it happen before and if you are lowered then all the more reason that a possible bad strut blew even faster. And just because it isnt leaking doesn't mean it isnt on its way out.

Interesting. Thanks. I will check again but there was no indication on the sway bar hitting anything. Endlinks are not new, they probably are 2-3 years old no more than that. I am at stock height on stock springs. Just the shock absorbers were aftermarket, the rest of the parts, including springs were new but OEM.

So you guys think it is a blown strut?

I got the video on this. The strut was done. However, now I am strongly considering the front one as well, also on the right side. As I said, 8000 miles. So terrible.

I would like to see how Fred Beans Parts responds to the warranty claim and also to make sure the subtle front clunk can be attributed to a strut failure.

I believe KYB warranties them for 1 year or 10K miles so you should be good to get at least something back.
