dshotterSD
I was putting on a spare tire and saw something that does not look good. I don't know much about cars so I would like to ask the experts This is on the front passenger side, it looks like oil is leaking. Is this bad?? I know its not good...anyone feel free to chime in thank you http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v436/Dshotter/problem.jpg
BAC5.2
Boot is torn. If it's been that way for a while then you'll have no choice, really, but to replace the axle. And holy crap that's a blurry picture! Max Capacity
FWIW, I got a replacement axle from the local auto parts store for $80.00 and replaced it my self. Unless this is covered by the dealer, don't go there. They will charge you about $400. or more to replace it. Go to a local repair shop, this is a easy job for them. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. AZP Installs
We charge 260 installed for front axles. The legacies go through them every 60k miles or so on turbo cars. Take it to infamous performance in so cal. Great guys and reputable place. I know them personally and they are like the AZP of the west coast. Looks like I've solved that. AZP Installs
Yup the heat from the downpipe causes the boots to dry and crack. Even on totally stock cars. Mike
BAC5.2
It's odd that I never had that happen on any of my other cars. Regardless, I don't think that'll happen to me. Judging by temp measurements, my CV boot is no warmer now than it was with the stock downpipe. DocHolladay23
Sounds good. compsurge
I can't tell if the boot is torn, it might just be the smaller clamp is loose. On mine, I have to replace the small front clamps on both front L/R as it causing the boots to lose a small amount of grease.
Max Capacity
In case you have trouble getting the axle to seat into the tranny. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/installing-axles-166892.html 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. dshotterSD
Thanks for the replies. I just got 4 new tires because the one tire that was on this part of the car was severely chopped on the inside. Could this make a tire get "chopped"? Also, is it best to replace both front axles - or can I just do one? Here's a better picture....not sure if it helps since you can pretty much tell whats going on in the first picture. I will have my friend look at it to see if the smaller clamp is lose, or if I need a new axle http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v436/Dshotter/driveshaft.jpg
DocHolladay23
Still hard to see, the place to look is that black rubber boot. It's pretty common for the passenger front one to crack/rip due to it being so close to the downpipe and subjected to the heat. All that crud is grease, not oil, and IMO this wouldn't really have anything to do with the tire failure. You can do just that side, no need to replace the driver's side unless it is also torn or the CV joint is making noise. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] You want stickers? Hit me up here!!! You want a shirt? Anytime the boot is breached it's best to replace the whole axle/cv combo because the grease usually becomes contaminated. You only need to do the one that is leaking. -mike http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg AIM: AZP Installs | E-mail: paisan@azpinstalls.com | 725 Fairfield Ave | Kenilworth, NJ 07033 | 908.138.AZP1(2971)| T-1 Certified Amsoil Direct Dealer "Race Tested, Enthusiast Approved!" boostedgrocerygetter
from what i can see your boot is actually not split open. its leaking out from the clamp loosing up. this is not uncommon and is actually happening on my vehicle. its totally up to you on how to fix it. i recommend taking the axle out taking the joint apart wiping as much of the grease out as you can and putting in new grease and installing a new boot. since im a mechanic and im lazy when it comes to my own car. im going to cut off the old clamp force out as much old grease as i can then insert a grease gun with a needle like tip (not through boot but between boot and axle) and if i get lucky be able to squirt new grease in. then ill just put a new clamp on. saving me about 1-1.5 hours in work.
