Wonder_Boy
Today i did the diy taillight tint mod for $20 on my car, and it turned out good. My parents even liked it, and i thought it looked nice on BSM. However, i know if it looks good it is probably illegal and i dont really want to find out it is when a cop is telling me that. I looked up the law and all i saw is that the lights have to be seen from 500ft away. Does anybody know for a fact it is or isnt legal in Va? Heres a link to the light law https://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+46.2-1013 Thanks for reading this wall of text and maybe saving me from a ticket
madcatz
Every motor vehicle and every trailer or semitrailer being drawn at the end of one or more other vehicles shall carry at the rear two red lights plainly visible in clear weather from a distance of 500 feet to the rear of such vehicle. pictures of your mod would help us understand To me, it seems clear, if you cannot make out the tail lights at 500 feet then it is illegal. Its Virginia, pay to play, if you want to mod your car your subject to discretion of the officer alot of the time.....Modified exhaust and the sort. -Travis Rob (rao) you're a fine gentleman, thanks I guess. madcatz
I think they are way to dark and you will probably be pulled. But just drive and act like nothing is wrong and if you get pulled just explain you bought the car this way, its passed inspection and you will fix it when you get home -Travis Rob (rao) you're a fine gentleman, thanks I guess. Wonder_Boy
Ill see how much attention they attract and what happens, then go from there. I live in southwest va so everything is pretty slow and quiet. Some cops are more laid back like you said. Might just take them off and use for photos only or something. Dont really want more attention from the cops then i need. Thanks

Bolksey85
IDK how VA cops are but in PA you'd get picked because those are way too dark. I have the overlays that were being sold in here and I've never gotten bothered once. *Knocks on wood* They're dark enough to make a difference but you can still easily see both the driving and brake lights in both daylight and at night. If you start getting bothered by it, maybe check into those. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/fs-tail-light-overlays-smoked-oval-cutouts-05-07-112198.html?t=112198&highlight=overlay
joedirtae09
that looks greaaaaaaaaaaat! but that looks so illegal!! I think you'll be able to get away with it at night but in the day time, you might be rolling the dice if you pass by a cop. My friends dad is a sherrif for fairfax county in northern va and he said whenever they see cars with tint of any sort on windows, lights, etc... they consider those cars "rolling tickets". Yup. One of the many reasons I moved out of Fairfax county. I even got pulled over with out of state tags once when visiting friends back in VA (tint was legal in my state). He checked my tint, I showed him where it was legal in my state and then I asked him WTF he wanted me to do about it.

MRLancaster
I'd remove them. State police arent to fond of tint. You will most likely end up with a ticket.
