Lucas
so ive been having an idle problem that i thought was electrical, so i bought a new battery and had the alternator checked. problem went away for a few days and then came back. Was the worst ive ever seen it tonight, I pull up to a stop sign push in clutch step on brake, radio, headlights are on. HORRIBLE oscillating idle almost stalling, and i can see the lights dim everytime it oscillates. Im totally stumped a little pissed off and kinda burned out on trying to fix this.... Any suggestions ? 1993 legacy ss td04 3inch turbo back walbro fuel pump TMIC 169,XXX miles
subikid90
Are you throwing a CEL? If so get the codes and post them, that will narrow it down a bunch. If not then check your plugs, wires and fuel pump pressure. -Subikid90 1997 Legacy GT 5spd & EJ251 w/EJ25D heads ~10.5CR 1998 Legacy GT Limited waiting for EJ22T hybrid swap
Lucas
No cel's fuel pumps a few years old, plugs and wires all check out
Legacy Wagon
I doubt the fuel filter would cause something so drastic, but it's worth a shot. One of the cheaper parts to replace.
subikid90
Did you timing belt skip a tooth. Pull the covers off and make sure everything lines up like it should. -Subikid90 1997 Legacy GT 5spd & EJ251 w/EJ25D heads ~10.5CR 1998 Legacy GT Limited waiting for EJ22T hybrid swap
Lucas
hmm i havent checked the timing belt, but it does need to be replaced. This problem only seems to happen when there somekind of load or draw applied. such as the head lights, radio, or even steeping on the brake will cause the oscillation to happen. subikid90
You might have a bad ground somewhere. Try installing a grounding mod. You can buy them online from paranoid fabrications or make you own DIY grounding mod. -Subikid90 1997 Legacy GT 5spd & EJ251 w/EJ25D heads ~10.5CR 1998 Legacy GT Limited waiting for EJ22T hybrid swap

SBT
Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. Especially stepping on the brake which is a huge vaccuum draw and if you've got a leak somewhere, it just amplifies it. Try the smoke test around all of your vacuum lines, inlets, valves, servos, etc., and see if you pick up anything - Pro amore Dei et patriam et populum -
Lucas
well its probably both to be honest. i wanna try the grounding kit and vacuum might be a problem but my boost gauge says other wise still getting 19-20 in hg at idle
SBT
And the BG is not flickering/fluttering? And to make sure I'm converting correctly 20 in hg = ~0.68 Bar so it's off boost at that point correct? What happens when you bring the boost? Still stable BG? - Pro amore Dei et patriam et populum -

SeriousSubie90
could be ground or vacuum but my girls impreza had the same problems and it was the cam sensor. idk.
MikuCidic
i had a some what similar problem. it turned out to be the MAF censer. but it didn't drive well either, a crap tone of low end power loss along with horrible idle and throttle lag. but my headlights and everything didn't dim. (MAF censer only a suggestion)

Legacy Wagon
It's only $40 new from Autozone for my RS so maybe that's the problem.
enzotheracer
use a dmm (digital multimeter) and ohm it out ( check the resistance). there should be a spec for the maf and cam sensor. check your iac (idle air control) as well.
