GI - 17" wheels from Sonic Tuning? Need 10 buyers with deposits...

Recommended Posts

So, spoke with Sonic Tuning today about potential availability of their wheels in 17" 5x100 Subaru specific fitment. This means single drilled, 56.1 hub bore - no universal drillings or hubcentric rings required...

They currently offer both 5x100 and 5x114.3 in 18" with their ST100 and ST120 styles and apparently have a shipment en route of their mesh ST8 wheels...

ST100 retails at $699 in 18x8.5 ET48

ST120 retails at $529.99 in 18x8.5 ET48

Unsure what the ST8 will sell for.

Now, here's the question. Is anyone interested in 17" versions of either the ST100 or ST8 wheels? I'm not going to bother with the ST120 as it's not unique enough compared to other similar offerings but the ST100 and ST8 don't have any real competition, save for the genuine article which is quite a bit more money...

I'd like to see if we can get enough people to get an initial run of these wheels made. Sonic Tuning needs ten sets to make it happen. They will require a deposit to hold your set. Lead time could be a few months (realistically).

17" ST100 (BBS CH reps) will be $649 or less I believe. Again, not sure on the ST8 pricing however intro specials may be available.

Also, it's important to note that new production is now low pressure cast and powdercoated. The low pressure casting results in lighter wheels than the previously used gravity cast method.

I understand Sonic Tuning tried to see if there was enough interest for 17s last year on Nasioc. However, when it was suggested that deposits were required to guarantee production, interest dried up. Perhaps that was partially due to the fact that they were a new company and their products hadn't been on the market for long. Now, if you check out the various forums, you'll see that they get great reviews in what looks to be their strongest market segments, the BMW and Audi aftermarket.

So, let's see if we can garner enough interest, and if so, get the official word from Sonic Tuning on costs, specs, and timing.

how wide and what colors would be available?

Personally I like the 120s the best out of the 3.

If they make 17s, I expect it would be 17x8 +48 offset.

That is probably the most popular size for the bulk of folks not running aggressive fitment.

I left out the ST120 as it is very similar to other wheels currently available on the market, eg Rota G-Force. But, perhaps that is what people really want? I could add it as an option to see if others also feel the same way. Price would be better than the G-Force, for sure. ST120 currently lists at $529.99 in 18" so would be less in 17.

Colors would be probably be the same as their current offerings which include black, matte black, gunmetal, silver, and bronze. I'm not sure if we would need all 10 sets in a particular style to be the same color - presumably they can finish wheels in lots by color not by style but not sure.

+1 Weight, width and offset information would be a HUGE plus.

Also, is that priced per set or per wheel?

As noted above, I'm pretty sure it would end up being 17x8 +48.

Pricing is per set. :)

Weights would be proportional to their current offerings I expect, with one added bonus - new wheels are low pressure cast, which should yield 5-10% weight reductions over current. Weights for all of their current wheels can be seen on their site, on the Additional Information tab for each wheel.

For reference,

ST120 18x8 currently lists at 24 lbs

ST100 18x8.5 currently lists at 28 lbs (keep in mind that original BBS CH, also cast and not forged, is ~25 lbs)

ST8 19x8.5 weighs 25 lbs (already low pressure cast)

Would the 17" ST100 clear STi brembos?

Any more pics?

If they clear Brembos, I might be interested in a set of ST100's in Silver.

I won't even consider without knowing if they clear Brembos. The maker of the wheel SHOULD know...

I really like the wheels though. I actually kind of like them in 18" fashion...

There's a pic of the 18" ST100's on an 05/06 Legacy. I'm not actually sure I like how that looks on that car...

I'd be interested in ST120 depending on width, offset, weight and price.

The ST120 DO NOT clear Brembos. I know because I have a set installed and just bought Brembo brakes (That do not fit :(). Below is a picture of the 18x8 (48mm offset) ST120's in gunmetal gray. They look great! Just DO NOT CLEAR BREMBOS.

EDIT-

Haha-Just noticed that on the nasioc link above sonic tuning is using my car to show off the ST120's. Maybe they should pay me for advertising! :)

I really hope the 17" ST100's clear brembos. I'd probably be sold on a set if they did.

17x9 40 offset ST100's in gunmetal quote please.

Ok, I just sent a note to ST. Hoping they either pipe up here in this thread or get back to me with some details.

I'll try to find out what they may consider producing - not sure which model or models they will consider or final dimensions, however my expectation is it will be 17x8 +48 (only) as it seems to be the most popular choice in 17 and will be easiest to sell.

Love to know what ST8's go for and avaliable finishes.

I'm most keen on the ST8 as well - we'll have to wait and see what they offer up, if anything.

Keep in mind - for production to proceed, they will require a commitment (paid deposit) for a minimum of ten sets. This requires us to either generate enough interest in the respective models or come up to a consensus on a particular design and then find the ten buyers for that model.

I understand its not smart to commit without pricing, so hopefully we can get some answers soon.

I think I'm going to go visit Sonic Tuning on wednesday to check out their wheels and talk to them about the possibility of a GB.

They have two other wheels I am interested in as well. The ST160:

http://www.sonictuning.com//media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/s/t/st160s-2_2_2_2_2_1.jpg

And the ST359:

Neither are currently available in Subaru fitment, but it might be possible to have a few sets made.

I think 17x8 +44 would be a great size, or just a 17x7.5 +48.

Alright, see if you can get ahold of Ray. I've already initiated discussions with him on setting up a GB but sounds like they're very busy ramping up for spring so I haven't pushed for additional details.

Whichever wheel design gets picked, it sounds like they require a minimum of ten pieces. Both of the above ST539 and ST160 have similar alternatives available at low cost from other manufacturers... (Kazera KZ-I at $142 ea, Sport Tuning T6 at $103 ea, from a quick perusal of tire rack)

I think we're best off going with a wheel design that is fairly unique in terms of competitive offerings.

I personally am still keenest on the ST8 (BBS LM mesh) tribute wheel design.

Neither the Kazera KZ-I and the Sport Tuning T6 clear Brembos.

I think the ST8 looks too much like the Rota Linea Course, a wheel that doesn't really do much for me.

The Linea Corse isn't available in 17 unfortunately - one of the reasons I'm keen to get a 17" offering as well as the fact that the ST wheels are more priced more attractively.

See what Ray has to say on which wheels they're willing to produce when you visit.

I will for sure. Hopefully they have some time to talk on Wednesday.

I think I'm partial to the 359 and the 160 because both look like they will have good brake clearance, and not have the spokes protrude out from the wheel face.

I have no idea what size I want. A 17x7.5 +45 or 17x8 +44 would probably be my choice.

I've run 17x7.5 for the last 5 years and would suggest that the 17x8 leaves more room for options in tire width.

A lot of the 235 or wider rubber have a manufacturer's min spec of 8" wide and I think many buyers would like to retain that flexibility if given the choice between 7.5" or 8" wide wheels.

What offset then? An 8" rim with a 48 offset limits you in tire size, I think. How about a +44?

I'm definitely interested in a set of the st100/160/359 in a 17x8 +44 offset so long as they clear brembos.
