Zac88
Both of my front struts are clunking so I want to upgrade soon to something stiffer, alot stiffer if possible! Anyone have any suggestions?
scoobydoobie
Konis or Bilsteins. Pretty much your only options (and they are good options at that).
kneedragger
Konis or Bilsteins. Pretty much your only options (and they are good options at that). There are Tokico's as well but he hasn't specifically said struts only....lots of options out there for coilovers. Ohlins, KW etc

BAC5.2
also from the price of bilsteins you can get coilovers Not really. $800 coilovers aren't worth the money. All they are is stiff, that doesn't make them good. scoobydoobie
also from the price of bilsteins you can get coilovers You asked about struts.. not coilovers. Keep your eyes out in the classifieds, there are good deals to be had. I got my set of Bilstein HDs (8K miles on them) and front spec.B top hats for $550 shipped. can I put on some used STi struts? No. Not really. $800 coilovers aren't worth the money. All they are is stiff, that doesn't make them good. +1 I thought that there was also some kyb's also correct me if I'm wrong... I know you guys will There are. KYB GR2s, but they are not really an upgrade, more of a replacement. The factory struts are KYB.
Zac88
hmmm so I guess I have to keep my eye out for bilsteins in the clasifieds. Curious do they bolt-in? Cause you mentioned SpecB tophats?
Draco-REX
As above, stiff does not equal good. The job of a strut is control. Stiffness comes from springs. A good strut is stiff enough to control your springs, but soft enough to allow the suspension to soak up bumps. For the legacy, the best strut option is the Bilstein HD. But for your 05, you'll have to get the spec.B tophats.
BAC5.2
For any LGT/OBXT, you need Spec-B tophats. Here are the required parts for the install: http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii287/bac52/attachment.png However, if you want a GOOD set of used coilovers, you can PM me about my Enduratechs! What makes them better than the Konis, which are cheaper and adjustable?
BAC5.2
Bilstein simply makes high quality parts. They might not be "better" than Koni's by some metric, but they are definitely VERY nice. BAC5.2
Probably around ~$1000 if you get a good deal on springs. BAC5.2
Yea, used can be much less. The only thing I got used were my JDM Spec-B Wagon springs. mustangendsley
also from the price of bilsteins you can get coilovers Very cheap coilovers!!!!!! Go the cut a strut route and get the Koni's and epic springs. Can't beat that and you don't need the spec b top hats.

They might not be "better" than Koni's by some metric, but they are definitely VERY nice. Fair enough, I'm honestly curious as I'm going to do a strut/spring upgrade soon, and from reading reviews etc, am having a hard time seeing why so many recommend the bilsteins over the konis, unless its the chopping up your stock struts part. Too bad there's not many head-head comparisons of the two, and the tokico for that matter.
goneskiian
Not to question the experience and expertise of those that have recommended the Bilsteins here in this thread but the folks I know here on these forums that I really trust say the Koni's are a better strut. They're both good but the Koni's are adjustable, have a lifetime warranty and DON'T require the use of spec b tophats. You just have to cut open the OEM front struts to install them. I've got the Koni struts with Eibach (read MSI/Epic Engineering) springs and love the ride for a daily driver. Cheers!
BAC5.2
I went with Bilsteins for one reason. I like their stuff. It's always been high quality and always provided a great ride. I don't race the car, and I probably wont ever race the car. I wanted OEM levels of quality, fit, and finish, with a minimum of install time. I wasn't let down, and I don't think you can go wrong with either option. motorbykemike
i also like the fact that the specb tophats have a larger bearing as well as less rubber to deflect during cornering/side loads . they can be used w/ the konis also , correct? BAC5.2
I think you have to use a washer of some sort to take up the gap, but yes. The bearing in the Spec-B hat is massive. Steering actually got surprisingly smooth and direct after the swap.
