Scoring on rear rotors?

Recommended Posts

I noticed a new whirring noise from the left rear yesterday.

not related to drivetrain, as it doesn't change with RPM.

I got home and looked at the rear wheels.

I noticed both rear brake rotors have concentric rings scored into them - the fronts look flat and smooth.

I don't know the issues are related, but was wondering if anyone had thought about the scoring - is this normal?

could somethingbe dragging, and causing the scoring and whirring noise?

thanks,

Typical questions to ask when diagnosing brake problems:

Does the noise go away when you step on the brakes, or when you're not on the brakes?

Still have the stock pads?

How many miles on your car?

Have you changed your wheels or tires recently?

noise is there when I'm not on the brakes, and seems to decrease when on the brakes.

12,900 miles

stock pads, wheels, & tires.

searched for "scoring" and "rotors" after posting - seems others have had issues with scoring, some replacements by SOA under warranty, others got free rotor grinds, others were SOL.

Question - what's our parking brake set-up?

Could you have a seized caliper from the parking brake?

Nah, Our parking brake is a drumb shoe inside the rotor setup, independant of the brake caliper.
