My Bilstein OBXT setup

BAC5.2

Recommended Posts

I played the Coilover game. At the end of the day, they were just too harsh for my wife.

As it sits, my car is about even with a Legacy GT Wagon. I'll take some fender-to-hub measurements to be sure. It could stand to sit a little higher, but right now I LOVE the ride quality.

As for being able to fit wider tires. It can surely be made to happen without much difficulty.

Perhaps the next time I have to buy tires, I'll downsize to 225/45/17's instead of the 55's I have now.

Teaser pic:

It sits a bit higher than the car did with the coilovers, but the ride is so smooth now, and much more planted than with the OEM suspension.

For reference, here it was with coilovers:

That looks pretty good. Car looks nice in White!

The back is a bit low for me since it accentuates the fake wide wheel wells.

I have emailed Stance about making some longer, softer coilovers for the Outback. My Megans don't ride too nice at all.

I agree, I am probably going to make 1" rear spacers and 5/8" fronts. That should help a lot.

I'm also going to swap wheels at some point in the future. Probably a set of STi BBS wheels.

I'm not THRILLED with my alignment (-2.0º rear camber, -0.3º front), but I didn't feel like spending that much time doing the alignment. I might redo it when it gets a little warmer out.

I'm jealous, that's a good amount of camber in the back. i think I only have around 1.2-1.4 in the back with pinks which are lower. I also have around 1.2 in the front and tire wear isn't an issue. In fact they wear better than when I had 0 camber. With zero camber the outer edges wore a whole lot faster than the inside. It looks pretty good, glad you like the ride quality.

I have the Whiteline KCA399 setup. Easy install and good results. Cleaned up some slop as well.

Ill probably realign it to -1.4 front and -1.5 rear when I do the spacers.

Oh man, this setup is absolutely perfect. A little bit more ride height, and I can't imagine a better overall setup.

It's firm, but not bouncy and not harsh. The whole car feels more solid, without skittering over bumps. Damping seems spot on. Absolutely perfect for a daily driver (and I drive 100 miles/day).

Parts list attached below!

That was it. The bilsteins come with dust boots (blue) and nuts, and I reused the top hat nuts.

Install was easy as pie!

I also have a Paranoid 3/8" rear spacer. I'm going to make my own 1" rear 5/8" front spacers though to gain a little bit of height.

My ride heights as the car sits:

Front - 14.75"

Rear - 14.50"

I'm a little bit torn. I am half tempted to run a 1" rear spacer on top of the 3/8" spacer I have now. Then, run a 1/2" spacer up front.

That would give me:

Front - 15.25"

Rear - 15.50"

I think that would probably be pretty good. I don't really see any fundamental problem running 1.325" worth of rear spacers. Grade 10.9 bolts are solid, and the rear strut really only sees uniaxial loading. The multi-link handles all other loads.

Input?

Have you got a picture?

I'm pretty sold on the spacer setup I proposed above.

Here's the only pictures I have right now. It gives you a good idea. I want to get rid of my coilovers and go back to struts and springs in the future, so I would like to see how this project turns out for you.

Are those stock sized tires (225/55/17) on stock wheels?

I think that sits just right. Are you sure it's 15.5 front and rear?

Awesome. Looks like I'll do a 1" rear and a 3/4" front.

That'll put me at the same ride height as you, which is JUST the look I am going for.

Where I am now would be perfect for LGT sized tires. But with OBXT tires, it's just too low. Plus, I want to keep this tire size no matter what I do to the drivetrain. The OBXT tire size with the Spec-B 6MT gear ratios makes for nice gear ratios (especially on the highway - 60mph @ 2170 RPM)

Wow, so you're looking at doing a 6MT swap huh? Awesome! Keep this thread updated with how the spacers work for you because I am looking to do something similar to my car in the future. Also, can you post pictures of the spacers you make? Thanks, I am looking forward to seeing the outcome of this project!

Eventually I will. I haven't yet decided which trans I'll use.

I'll probably try to get an 07+ Sti transmission with the JDM Forester 5th/6th combo and use a Spec-B non-DCCD center diff, and use an STi rear diff. A Spec B driveshaft and rear axles, and probably an OEM 6MT clutch and flywheel to round it all out. That way, I'll have the front and rear LSD's, and I can worry about getting DCCD working at some later date. I'd probably use a DCCD-Pro controller and stuff the control wheel and switch into the completely unused ashtray to hide it.

As for the spacers for my current project, I'll be sure to keep posted.

Material is expensive, so I might just buy some off-the-shelf 1" spacers and then stick the front spacers in the mill and pull 0.250" off of them. Quantity of scale bites me in the butt. To get enough 1" 6061 to make my own spacers, I can buy a set off the shelf. I hate it when that happens.

I'll compile a spreadsheet for the 6MT stuff when the time comes.

I don't know of anyone with a 6MT in an Outback...

I personally am not a big fan of the shims on top of the struts. I do have the 3/8 shims in the back, but I was very reluctant to put them on. If you look at the rear shock top mount and how it goes up and into the hole in the chassis, you can clearly see how it's going to be held in place fairly well. As soon as you put a spacer on top the mount is no longer inside that chassis opening. Clearly this will alter how the force of an impact to the wheel or suspension plays out. I'm not going use internet physics to predict what will happen, all I'm saying is that it will change things in a side impact. That's my only concern. It seems to be a much better idea would be to shim the bottom by using a thicker lower spring seat. But when I talked to a Bilstein dealer about this he said shimming the top is a widely accepted practice.

Nothing bad can really happen from properly secured spacers.

Yep. You have to do that even with a 3/8" spacer.
