ehsnils
Whether you like it or not, many companies are downsizing to 4-cylinder engines with turbocharging technology. Porsche has confirmed that there is a 4-cylinder gasoline engine currently under development that will power the next-generation Cayman, Boxster and maybe even the 911. ... http://www.egmcartech.com/2011/01/18/porsche-flat-4-cylinder-turbocharged-unit-in-the-works/ And they have even been thinking of a 3-cylinder engine in the Boxster. http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1041166_porsche-considering-three-cylinder-engine-for-2012-boxster

Surprisingly I'm OK with this ... as long as it's not a hybrid. I'm even OK with the hideous Panamera if it affords Porsche the ability to crank out GT2 & 3 super cars. (Got behind a Panamera this morning on the way to work and I didn't blow chunks(the tag was 846-911)).
GTTuner
They should. They have the experience, I just hope it is not air cooled, AKA VW Bug motor.

Penguin
They'll just buy the stellar EJ25 from Subaru. The end all be all of engines.
sactojesse
Porsche hasn't offered a flat-4 since the 1976 912E and that car used a VW-sourced 2.0l Type IV engine from the 914. Turbo flat-4 Cayman would be nice!

Too bad the Porsche faithful would scream bloody murder over a 500hp Cayman.
