gil_ong
anyone else have this problem? i use the ciggie adaptor to power my Garmin GPS. maybe it's that the plug is so large, but i'm busting my knuckles on it when i shift into 5th. i have a KB short-throw shifter installed. i was wondering if i might be able to tap into the wire and install another socket on the outside of the console next to the passenger's left knee. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5202/5235484781_3813fd288a_z.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/gil_ong81/5235484781/ http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5084/5236077042_7e47a22c93_z.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/gil_ong81/5236077042/ http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5087/5235485907_f2ac4a89d6_z.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/gil_ong81/5235485907/
CwhillVT
Yep, that was alway a pain for me too. I have gauges down there now so it isnt an issue anymore. Have you considered hard wiring the connector behind the dash and routeing it out by the windshield? You could then just buy a second one for use in other cars? gil_ong
the thing with this GPS is that it's STUPID. if i plug it in with a USB, it thinks i'm connecting to a computer and won't work as a GPS. won't boot up at all. also, have you had problems with the gauges there? i'm not sure i like the idea of taking my eyes so far off the road to see them. i'll probably go with mounting them in the cubby above the clock. fatbastard
I used a fuse power tap then connected a 12V connector inside the dash and ran the power cord up through the back of the cubby.
gil_ong
pics of the cubby please?
fatbastard
Couldn't find a pic of the cubby itself but here is the install with the proclip mount. Using the tool that came with the mount I pulled the cubby out, drilled a small hole to fit the USB connector through and used a grommet in the hole to make sure it couldn't fall back into the dash. BigBad
I just plug mine into the outlet inside the center console storage box keeping the cord to the right side between passenger seat and console tunnel as I need to swap mine from vehicle to vehicle. It works pretty well.
fatbastard
Not the best of pics since the flash on the phone sucks but this is the hole and grommet I was talking about.
gil_ong
I just plug mine into the outlet inside the center console storage box keeping the cord to the right side between passenger seat and console tunnel as I need to swap mine from vehicle to vehicle. It works pretty well. i use mine in two different vehicles as well. i've tried using the socket in the center console, but since i have the GPS on my windshield, the cable sorta gets in the way. i can deal with it, but it's just not an especially elegant solution. and when it's cold out, it's damn near impossible to straighten the cable. BigBad
I snap mine into a weighted dash top mount that sits on top the the dash and the cord naturally loops to the right and down out of the way. I don't use the suction cup mount as the telltale ring it leaves on the glass tends to get you car broken into around here.

adversexreality
its just a pre-wired female socket from radio shack, hotwired to the cigarette lighters fuse. plugged the navi right into that, tucked the wires, and BAM< I make T-Shirts! and I Detail Cars(I'll go to you!) fatbastard
I used something like [ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QRSBW0/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_3?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000CQDRTI&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0Q8QQCABKBGXEWBS8EFC]this[/ame], that I picked up at a local auto parts store. One slot is for the original fuse, the other slot is for the new device. Then pick up a ciigarette outlet that comes with flying leads. 12V goes tot he wire out of fuse adaptor and the other goes to a good ground. Then just connect your charger and route the wires.
