Becoming one with the car.

Recommended Posts

I have had my LGT 5MT for 3 weeks now, and I had THAT experience yesterday driving down the highway. Shifting beautifully and seamlessly as I knifed my way through traffic, adjusting the ACC without even looking at it. That's when it came over me, the newness of the car had worn off - but it was a good thing. I felt like I did for 3 years in my GTI, one with the car. Like the perfect union between man and machine. The car feels like I was born to drive it. The car is everything I want and need, and I am happier than ever with my decision to buy it. The Legacy fits like a glove.

My girlfriend doesn't get it. I know that you all probably do.

My fiance' wasn't really interested in driving my old MX-6 since it was stick. I think the idea of borrowing my LGT is making her more interested in practicing... Too bad we havn't reached that point in our relationship yet :D

My gf gets it, but she just hasnt learned how to drive a stick correctly to know what power even feels like.

Yeah, everytime I drive the gf's 200SX she thinks I am going to blow it up. I just tell her that I am blowing out the cobwebs and that the 200 needs to be DRIVEN. She is going to "grandma" that thing to death I swear.

My wife understands it, but she just doesn't really participate. She hasn't even driven the LGT yet and I've had it for over 3 months now. She is happy in her automatic Accord, but she does appreciate the acceleration when we are in the LGT and I need to get around people. ;) She's commented a couple times that the "Accord just doesn't do that..."

Very, very cool post. ;)

I'm just now getting acquainted with Winky, my "periwinkle" '05 LGT Limited - well, at least that's what the wife calls Atlantic Blue Pearl.

I'm still figuring out the best seating position and in the process of hardwiring her with my Escort X50/Shifter ZR3 combo as well as a AutoMeter Nexus boost gauge and some other minor free and low-dollar mods. We're definitely bonding.

I think that the first oil change will be the true bonding point, though. I never quite feel connected with my cars until I've shed some blood on them.

Many happy days of driving to you and your gal.

HaHa! Very true my friend, there's nothing like busting your knuckles whilst squeezing your fingures through the engine bay. I just need my tax return check in order to get started on my first stage of goodies!

LOL indeed, fellow 5MT LGTer and Scooby friend  - I spilled first-blood today already!

In my first-stage of switch-over from the TSi to the LGT, I transferred my MOMO T200/T100 set as well as my trusty old RAZO drilled aluminum pedal set.

The floor-mats required a bit of cutting for the driver's side (I removed the MOMO badging and trimmed the left lower corner to fit into the cover surrounding the trunk and gas release pulls), as well as repositioning of the metal grid plate, but that was a no-brainer.

What got me to bleed just a drop was re-installing my pedal pads. I managed to snag my hand on one of the hex-bolts used to secure the pads. Boy did that smart!

Well, at least Winky and I bonded a bit more. ROFL.....

Those floor mats should go nicely with the steering wheel and MOMO microphone shift knob (if you have it).

Might as well go ahead and announce that I couldn't wait any longer, ordered Autometer Nexus Gauges (Boost, EGT, and Oil Pressure) from Pete at PLTek about 20 minutes ago. That should make for a nice project in a couple of weeks - making the car even more "mine".

Major thanks to Pete at PLTek, he got me a great deal with everything I need to install those gauges myself.

I'm nowhere near that point and likely will never be... The Legacy is nowhere near as communicative as my last car, especially the steering. It's a tradeoff I was willing to make for a luxurious ride.

You know when you are one with the car when YOU cringe at the mis-matched rev-matches. Just the other day after running with the GAS LIGHT ON ever since from my house to FedEx Field for an autoxcross (30 miles one way), shared my car with another driver (8 miles total for autox), and drove all the way back to my neighborhood to the typical gas station I usually fill up (25 miles).. I pumped in:

15.885 gallons into the tank before the safety switch hit on the pump.. talk about running til I had no FUMES left. Yea, I milked the heck out of the gas tank.

That's how you know you got the fuel down cold. The GF calls me a total dork when I tell her these "silly" stories.. but she doesn't mind.. the only thing she does mind is when I hit over .8g's worth of cornering.. I have to fore-warn her that I will be making such turns.

Holy crap...you are the master...I pride myself in running the tank to near dry, but I can't claim to have ever come THAT close to dead empty without running out first.

Yeah, no doubt, but in a sense, a true gearhead IS a dork. Being into your car as much as many of us are is comparable to being like a Trekkie or something, only on a slightly "cooler" level.

isnt the fuel pump cooled by the extra gas in the tank? so empty tank= hot fuel pump?

It's impossible to completely empty the take on these. There will always be some gas in the tank that is unusable. 2 gallons I think?

Same thing with my wife. She calls me a dork about the car all the time, but she doesn't get too upset. When I showed her the new limit on my new tires, she squealed during the turn, but then when I got back on the straight she was all calm and said "You're right, they're a lot better!". :D She says that her friend is the "oh sh*t" handle. There's an S turn on the commute to work everyday that we know quite well, she just braces herself for it as we come up and I don't have to say anything. :)
