wrxtacy2003
Just wondering if a 2005 legacy gt automatic uses CAN bus? I was told by someone they think it does, but I have NOT been able to verify this information. I have been searching lots of forums and google and cannot find any answer other than all 2007 and newer subarus use CAN bus. Thanks
Mega Users seabass07 Posted October 28, 2010 Mega Users Share Posted October 28, 2010 It uses the vag-com
wrxtacy2003
So are you sure it is NOT CAN bus? The reason being, is that I want to purchase this 05 LGT but it is an auto, and I plan on switching to a 07 sti 6 speed. If the LGT is CAN bus I will not be able to do this trans swap. Please NO comments about the swap, I have been working on wrx's and sti's since 05, I know for sure what I'm getting into. I did a 6 speed swap in my wrx. I just don't have any experience with LGTs. I only want to be 100% sure the car is not CAN bus. Thanks
burnout8488
05 is not can bus. 07+ is.
wrxtacy2003
I just download the 05 FSM and it says that it uses CAN bus, but both you guys say it isn't... So does anyone know for sure?
Mega Users seabass07 Posted October 29, 2010 Mega Users Share Posted October 29, 2010 Well my 05 OBXT is the same as an LGT under the hood and it uses vag-com. If you look at the sticky in the tuning section about the ebay vag-com cable, it will answer your questions.
burnout8488
Are you swapping the transmission or engine AND transmission? Hopefully a member that knows more about CAN can help you, that seems odd. Maybe other aspects of the car use CANBUS but not the diagnostics on 05-06. wrxtacy2003
I'm just going to be swapping the trans because I don't want an auto one. Yea, I think the diagnostics aren't CAN bus, but I think some of the other parts of the car communicate via CAN. I would just buy a 5mt one, but I want a white one only, and I can't find a 05-06 white LGT 5mt anywhere.... So, I guess my real question should be: Can I swap a manual trans, specifically a 6 speed, into an auto LGT??? I know mechanically it can be done, but the issues seem to be with electronics. So if anyone knows if this can be done, I would greatly appreciate it.
burnout8488
Pretty sure its been done... just can't think of a thread to refer you to. As far as the swap, check out the 6MT master swap thread in the Transmissions category if you haven't already. Very helpful.
Mega Users seabass07 Posted October 29, 2010 Mega Users Share Posted October 29, 2010 I know NSFW has a 6mt swap from a 5eat. I'm not sure what year he has.
wrxtacy2003
All the swap threads are from 5mt to 6mt. But the problem is only when doing an auto to manual (5mt or 6mt) conversion. This is also only for the 05+ years. I know it has been done on the 3rd gens. I'll just post over in the trans forum. Thanks guys.
wrxtacy2003
FWIW, from reading the 2005 LGT FSM, I have determined both the auto and manual cars use CAN to communicate between ABS, Steering, immobilizer, and a couple other electronic devices.
