C & D test of an MGT-convert

Recommended Posts

Now I know, like all their tests, they "correct" their

times to "ideal" atmospheric conditions, but

they got a manual tranny MGT convertible to do:

0-60 in 5.0 seconds

1/4 in 13.7 @ 103 mph

0-120 in 19.6 seconds!

Now, this is a tenth faster than they got a coupe.

So either they got a "hot" convertible or the coupe's

they tested weren't fully broken in and running up to their

full potential.

But good lord, if that's the case, the coupe could be capable

of 4.9 seconds to 60 and possibly 13.5 @ 104 mph in the 1/4

That's pretty darn quick for a 300 hp 3600 pound plus car.

They must be right...the new manual and gearing must be pretty

exceptional.

I do like they use the Pirelli P Zero Nero M&S as the stock tires (what I

put on my LGT) because it means they must hook up pretty good too.

But what's funny is that the guys at C&D (which more often than not

prove to be dimwits) bagged on the tires for "dry weather grip".

Guess they (again) didn't do a bit of research to find that thousands

of people are switching to these tires as the tire of choice for

VERY respectable grip (in most conditions), and based on MILLIONS of miles of driving and

hundreds of responses from people with all kinds of cars rated this

tire #1 in the UHPAS tire category at Tirerack. I believe the Tirerack

editors did the same.

True they aren't quite as sticky as Max Performance Summer Tires or the near R compound

found on some cars, but they surely aren't bad.

Proving their dimwittedness C & D suggested switching to

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires. Yet, those tires aren't made in the

stock MGT size, so they failed to mention that.

But they could get Continental ContiSport 2's

which are VERY good and would drop about 3 pounds EACH tire rotational mass...which would improve acceleration, handling and braking times.

I gotta go out and drive one of these MGT's soon to see for myself how the

car performs. But those trap speeds are WRX STI trap speeds, and with traps like that, the MGT manual would (slightly) pull away from a Stage 2 LGT manual from a roll....that's a quick car!

Yeah, I'm still waiting for the local Pontiac dealer to get 6 speed manual

GTO's in. I haven't heard from them yet, and have driven by twice

only to see the same auto GTO parked in the front, and no others in yet.

Maybe next week.

Yes, MGT = Mustang GT

On the highway though, the LS2 GTO will still dominate. In fact, I wouldn't be afraid of a stock Mustang GT in an LS1 Trans Am, either.

The LS2-powered GTO is a beast, not to be messed with. I have dispatched several of the new Mustang GT's with my wife's "old" LS1-powered convertible Z28.

LS2 is amazing. I test drove the new Vette and was shaking for a half hour afterwards. You can overpower the rear tires on dry pavement exactly like a normal car can in 6 inches of snow. I'd hurt myself with one of those! Imagine if they put the LS2 with a Subaru all-wheel drive system? Can you say Total World DOMINATION?

I am pretty sure that he was talking about a live axle. That would be pretty hard to have in a FWD car.

Blah for me, too. For all the talk of the GTO, it at least has an IRS, even if the bodywork isn't nearly as good looking.

There is more to life than the quarter mile. If there isn't more to the new Mustang, then I'll move on. I used to be a huge mustang freak, but my tastes have "matured" a bit, but the Mustang hasn't, at least not enough with the stick-axle.

A 400hp Turbocharged 3.0 liter Porsche 968 (or a 968 with a 928 S4 5.5 32-valve V8 dropped in instead. 6mt, of course.) sounds better to me, than even a new Mustang Shellby GT 500. Probably similar outlay in cash, new vs. used/modified/refreshed.
