1-3-2-4
I went ahead and did this (the IAC in in front of me now) it's not that hard but be warned some coolant will puke out of the lines to the IAC (did not see this on any other sites. I used carb spray and I cleaned out the hoses and I used about the rest of the can for the IAC.. the hoses alone had a lot of crap in it. make sure you take off the top part that you plug in the connector to so you can rotate the shutter and when you clean it make sure it moves freely without any resistance. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v77/SubaruWRX/IMAG0304.jpg haynes says at operating temp remove the IAC and make sure the shutter is closed like this http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v77/SubaruWRX/IMAG0308.jpg mine looked like this but I did not remove at operating temp due to the coolant lines I knew that would spill. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v77/SubaruWRX/IMAG0305.jpg
Colando Dunes
if you don't feel like removing the whole thing you can remove the hose coming off the bottom of your intake just after the maf and spray some cleaner in there. i had this problem where the iac would get stuck open and cause some crazy rpms during idle. 1-3-2-4
I tried that way before it did not help at all and I'm happy that I removed it. You can see here how the cleaning helped on a warm start.
