You can replace the pulleys on the front of the motor with lightweight ones from Perrin, or buy some cheapo brand on eBay. Boxer4Racing also has an aluminum MAF adapter that can help you install a short ram intake for little money. I think the MSD ignition coil swap will work for the 2.5L engine as well. For parts to install an MSD ignition coil you're looking at just over $100. You can have an exhaust shop weld up just about any muffler you want for cheap money, or go all the way and either do a cat back, or entire header back system. After that I'd just work on maintenance items. Performance mods won't do anything if your car runs like shit and hasn't been maintained. Common items to check and/or replace with a used car include (But are not limited to) spark plugs, spark plug wires, fuel filter, air filter, O2 sensors, belts, engine oil, diff fluid, transmission fluid & filter (Or gear oil depending on if this car is manual or automatic), and other things along the same lines. Fuel injectors can be costly but will make a difference. Most of the time they are easy to replace on the Subaru boxer engine assuming that the screws for the caps don't strip. Check any hoses for cracks or leaks, especially in the vacuum lines. Also check the condition of the timing belt. I bet that if you replace some of these maintenance items you won't even need to do many performance mods. Most people think there car is weak in power because it's behind on some serious maintenance. Top Gear was trying to do a speed test one time and found that a 220HP V6 engine in some Renault was actually only putting out 120HP. With less than $300 in parts they got the car back up to 210HP

If you want to get even more technical you can install a lightweight flywheel (If this car is a stick shift). Replacing struts and U-joints, even if they're OEM replacement parts can make a big difference too. Same with rod ends and sway bar bushings. Whiteline Racing has a great selection of sway bars, brackets, and bushings for these cars. You can pretty much replace all the suspension bushings in your car with high quality, high density Whiteline bushings for a small investment. The advantage would be a firmer ride with increased response and reduced body roll.

Quality brake parts can help too. If you have the time and the motivation you can replace the steel brake lines with stainless lines that hold up to hydraulic pressure way better. The stainless lines will improve braking response by reducing bulge in the lines, putting more of the pressure into your calipers and less into the brake lines. NAPA also sells drilled rotors for a good price, and they're 10,000X better than those shitty-ricer-ass drilled rotors you find on eBay. Match those with some good pads and you're golden in the braking department. Note, however, that drilled rotors can chew up pads faster than regular rotors. They're not as harsh on the pads as slotted rotors, but they're still more harsh than regular solid ventilated rotors.

If you want to tear the engine apart you have a lot of possibilities. Polished crank, different cams, pistons of all sorts, con-rods from just about anyone, ect... Something tells me that you're just looking for bolt-on stuff though, in which case you should stick to the first three paragraphs of this post.

So yeah... Boxer4Racing has everything. There is a lot more that can be done to this car than people think. Some of these things are very affordable. Some are not. Either way, that site is your first stop to making the second gen Legacy truly badass.

Actually, all this got me thinking. I just made myself a wish list for the Legacy of things I'll never buy.

The grand total for all the parts including an overbore, Wesco pistons, Xcelleration crank, Eagle Conrods, ARP studs, ARD crank, Godspeed radiator, 5 speed tranny, LSD's front and rear, STI RA ratios, big brakes, adjustable struts, and a bunch of other stuff comes to $26,439. That's excluding the body work that it needs and a nice set of wheels and tires. I estimate the car would be about 265 horsepower (Naturally Aspirated) after that. The funny part is that it would still look like a beater but it would have a smaller engine and more power than a brand new turbocharged Legacy GT. It might even be just as reliable since there would be pretty much no stock parts left on the car. Infact, the only things Subaru would have made would probably be the engine block halves and the body.

Isn't it nice to dream... ;)
