ssaldana
Fellow owners, I'm having an issue with my 2005 Legacy GT. Problem: I started my drive from North Carolina to New York City and noticed that there was a slight loss in compression after 2500 RPM. Over the course of 7 hours in transit, the compression got worse. When tapping and holding lightly on the pedal, the car is fine and accelerates slowly. When pushing the pedal down moderately or all the way to the floor, the RPM needle jumps and keeps going to redline. During this process there is still some acceleration, though very slow. Half way in to the drive I heard a faint whistle where the volume level of this whistle was dependent on the Engine RPM. The faster the RPM, the louder the whistle. This lasted for 7 minutes. The car is driveable only if I push the pedal down lightly. Please help!

RabidWombat
Manual or automatic? It could be an issue with the transmission not engaging properly. I had a similar experience with a friend's Mazda.
bluesuby
I would check for a leak or a loose intake plenum. If the engine is sucking air after the MAF sensor it'll upset the fuel/air mix (and probably whistle too).
ssaldana
Rabid, Manual Trans. bluesuby, I'll mention that possibility to Subaru tomorrow. Other things I neglected to mention... I just had maintenance done before the problem: Oil Change Oil Filter Air Filter Cabin Filter All Fluids Didn't think that would affect this but just throwing this out there just in case. Any more thoughts anyone?
