which tire size

stock tire are 205/50R17 but the tire size tire rack recommends for the aftermarket 17x7 inch wheels are 215/45R17 . How big of a difference are they?

That's the stock size for the 05-09 GT (except Spec B). You can also go up a width to 225/45 17 and still be fine.

 

If you're getting snow tires, you might want to stick with 205/50 17.

I kind of assumed this, but is there any problem with 215/40/17 instead of the 215/45/17?

I am coming off of 205/50/17, and wanted a slimmer profile

I would recomend 225/45/17. A little wider but still low profile. Don't go too low or it will ride like doo doo!

Check load index.

You do not want tires that cannot handle the weight of the car.

I snapped this a while back. Its a good representation of the smallest and largest tires that are typically used on stock wheels for the Legacy. Not a big difference. though its 16" the one on the right is the same width as your OE tire.
