worknlikeadog
I know virtually nothing about Subaru transmissions. What transmissions fit on our second gens? Do all Subaru trannys bell-housings fit on all Subaru engines? I am really just doing some research for future potential projects. subikid90
Zues is right. I believe the 6 speed trans has a few more bolts but still has the same pattern. -Subikid90 1997 Legacy GT 5spd & EJ251 w/EJ25D heads ~10.5CR 1998 Legacy GT Limited waiting for EJ22T hybrid swap
worknlikeadog
ok sounds good but what about axles
subikid90
I believe axles are close to the same. Different mounting brackets but same holes. You have to make sure the wheel base is the same. -Subikid90 1997 Legacy GT 5spd & EJ251 w/EJ25D heads ~10.5CR 1998 Legacy GT Limited waiting for EJ22T hybrid swap
something different
auto vs manual axles are different length and when you go new enough the axles go into the trans like they do in the rear. keep in mind if you swap the trans you MAY have to swap the rear, which are all interchange. tom
Subiegirl99
So, does this mean I could pull a 2nd gen 2.2 engine from an automatic to drop into a 2nd gen 5 speed? I was told before that I could only use an engine from another MT.

Subiegirl99
with out real info, this thread is worthless. what car model year engine trans miles color? phase 2? do you mean second gen? 99 + ej22 ??? or 00+ ej25? help me understand, please?????? Hello again johnegg, You've been helping me out on another thread which I posted about a 98 legacy l 2.2, 5MT with possible bent valves. When my car stopped working after a botched t- belt job, I was told by a Subaru dealer mechanic that if I wanted to replace the entire engine, I would need to pull one from a car with a MT. An engine from an auto wouldn't work because the engine wouldn't line up with a 5MT. I've decided to just replace the head that's damaged, but I'm still curious if what I was told is actually true. If it's not, I could've had my car running months ago! I would've never bought this 99 I now have... Thanks!
wtdash
howdy as stated up top, AT/MT will work... every ej series tranny fits on every other ej series motor,,, and vice versa Scares me when a 'Subie dealer mechanic' states BS that it 'won't line up'. There are a few gotchas but nothing that won't 'line up'. GL, TD
johnegg
in the 95 - 98 cars there is only one difference between the ej22 engines, m/t vs. a/t. and that is EGR on the intake manifold. (exhaust gas re-circulation) it is an emissions thing. the auto trans cars have it and the manual trans cars do not, usually. if your car has EGR then you will want a replacement engine that has it. other wise you will ALWAYS have a CEL and trouble code. the engine will run fine, it will just have a Check Engine Light. in some states this will not pass inspection. if you car does not have EGR, you can swap in an engine with ot without it, it does not matter. ALL ej25 engines 96 - 98/9 have EGR. so if you were swapping in an ej22 in its place you would want one with EGR. to your specific case 98 ej22 w/ manual trans, either engine would swap a/t or m/t. some years would swap better, easier, into your car than others, let me know if you need the info.
