what causes ridges on rotors?

The other day I was replacing the wheel bearing on the car we just purchased as a "driveway find" and noticed that the inner side of the rotor had about 3 ridges on it.

The braking isn't affected in any way, it still feels good. The pads look like the previous owner had replaced them recently and the ridged side simply had the same corresponding recesses as the rotor ridges.

I can see having grooves from running the pads down to the rivets and eating up the rotor, but this is the opposite of grooves. How would this happen?

Brake pads have frictional additives, fillers, binders, and reinforcing fibers. They don't necessarily mix together perfectly. You are see the formations of the friction additives getting embedded into your rotors. This actually gives more surface area between the pad and the rotor and is not really something to worry about.
I forgot what I was supposed to remember.
