5EAT TCU Reverse Engineering

That is the same table I am referring to. It says so right in the part of the vacation pics that talks about trans control. TCU references 4 values including "REQUESTED TORQUE" to determine target line pressure. That is the exact table.

 

Awesome, so my $400 seems to be a good use for the AP so far:lol:

So what should I do if you dont mind helping me. The max number AccessTUNER Race allows is 500 - which rpms and accel position to change

And since this is easy for me to edit (plug and play) Ill make changes and load to AP and test the car and report back to you guys

I am no wizard at this myself, but what I would do is scale up the requested torque maps by X percent so the highest original value is scaled up to the max you are allowed. The next part I would double check on first, but basically it's that you adjust down your Throttle Angles tables proportional to your RT increase so you don't end up changing the actual throttle input response. Then see if you feel any difference in shift firmness. The good news is these tables won't blow up your engine, so you have some slack.

I did not adjust TP angle

 

1st increased the chart equally until the 100 Accel Position was at 490, loaded map and went for test drive, felt nothing still shifted smooth. Came back and started to smell something burning, I think its oil because I went to Pepboys for oil change and I dont quite trust them 100%. Hopefully its not the clutches burning after the full throttle shifting at mid/low rpms

 

2nd increased everything across the board except 1st 2 columns. All other columns was adjusted to 490 (in S# mode) went out for test drive in S#, didnt feel anything, still shifted smooth.

 

Maybe the prob was I just loaded the map and the car didnt adjust to yet to the current map. Will do another test drive tomorrow after I put a few miles on the car

I think it may be less then we think. I didnt feel a difference at any rpm under any throttle. I do have the trans bushing insert installed also. Still shifted smooth

 

Maybe we dont feel it cause theres more in the trans to make it shift smooth. ex: the pistons have cushioning springs to make the engagement of gears smooth and not slam into gears, remove a few of the springs and it will engage rougher = less heat and longitivity

Aside from smoothness, any reduction of shift time noticed? Even with the IPT VB I notice it still takes a long time to shift at higher RPMs.

 

I dont think there was a reduction in shift time. Plus I have an 08 and they reduced the shift time anyways

I've been meaning to take some pics of a spare 4EAT TCM that I have, but have to find the charger for the camera as my phone takes crappy pics

ClimberD said to adjust down Throttle Angle, how much/should I adjust. Down would be less numbers but letting you guys know it goes up to 100. I dont know/cannot add more columns. So do I need to adjust 333 to 490:confused: Orig Map went over 333 in Req Torque so I assume ill be fine:confused:

 

BTW Si-Drive, all Req Torque chart is different in the 3 modes, so is also Throttle Angle chart

 

I increased Req Torque from 350 to 490 (look at earlier chart)

 

This map is Cobb Stage 1 ACN91

I get confused on what's up and what's down especially when tired. Will look at it tomorrow. But basically the two tables should bs thought of as one string command with a layer of separation, if that makes any sense. So even though you have a much higher RT, it should still be the same throttle open angle if the table horizontal header scaling is made to match. I'll check tomorrow. But either way you are only messing with the gas pedal, not fueling or timing or boost or self-destruct.

05LGT here, only got one table for requested torque and it is a realtime table. Seems simpler for me if there are real results in tuning this. Here's a screenshot of what I see in mine. Just your standard Cobb OTS Stg2 map. I wonder what impact changing these values has on the rest of the tune though.

Fishbone. There's another table that says Throttle Angle iirc. It's the last table/picture I posted on the previous page.Req Torque on top row and your changing Throttle Angle. Did u change anything there? If u did can u post it also?

EDIT: I read it earlier on my phone. Its just a OTS Stage 2, nothing else done. Ill compare a Stage 2 to a Stage 1 and see any diff. There is no diff in Cobb OTS Stage 1 91, 93, ACN 91

I got it. I'm trying to figure out a program that can take that file and extract the raw rom from it. It's a lot bigger then the flash memory in the TCU, so I have to figure out what is the ROM.

 

How long does applying updates to transmissions take you all? I'm wondering if it's like ECUflash that only changed the parts that are needed, or if it dose a complete wipe and flash.

 

 

Edit: DOH! I just realized how to pull the flash off this thing. The data sheet has the memory map. I just need to use that and this SSMIII tool that a generous member sent me to read the entire flash memory. Then I can decompile the damn thing, and see what we need to do to update the maps. That is if they don't block any address ranges. Does IDA Pro 4.9 support the M32R or do I need to shell out for IDA Pro 6.0?

It takes much longer than ECUflash does to flash a car, but usually it writes the changes and then does another pass to verify the changes, but I believe that it wipes the rom and writes all new.

We got it, now to see if I can do a read block from the flash memory space.

 

Edit: Oldr subaru ECU's used the same M32R processor. They managed to make a bump, so I'll try based on what they did.

I'm getting different payload sizes for the SAME command. So ether the test software does not like what I'm doing of the TCU is finicky about things.

So ether my cable is bad, laptop messed up, or there is other gibberish going on that is comfusing the program I'm using.

 

FreeSSM wont talk to my ECU, so it may very well be noise and the cable.

So adjusting the Req Torque did make a difference. When I tested earlier I was doing WOT runs, today I was just doing city driving. There was not a difference in shifting, but there was more 'resistance' while driving. From what I understand for more 'resistance' is the lockup is gradual, not on/off. So adding more line pressure added more lock up at a lower rpm. I only changed S#, so when I changed to S the resistance was gone/decreased, and shifted back to S# resistance I can feel some resistance.

 

I did have a 2-3 upshift bang and that might have gotten a bit worse at higher rpms but I dont really know. What I do know if downshifting from 2-1 at high rpm it hit 1st pretty hard after rev matching, this is around 32mph

 

My concern now is if we have a pressure plate for lockup, will the increase line pressure at lower rpm and higher lockup wear the pressure plate more? Or whatever part is for lockup?

Nice start!!! I adjusted the top row of the throttle table, the one that is the table header. It is scaled up by the same % the RTq map is scaled up. You may have found something else since you did not adjust the accelerator map, which is that the manual states that throttle plate position and accelerator position are also pulled from the ecu to determine trans behavior. I wish I could work on this side by side with you, but I am still getting tuned, and am chasing a pesky air leak. Hopefully we can figure out exactly where to add pressure to benefit us with a greater clamping safety margin, without sacrificing comfort when it is not needed. I'm sure there is sn optimal way to tune these accelerator tables for trans behavior.
