can I swap roof racks easily on my 1996 wagon?

Recommended Posts

Hey Folks,

We have a 1996 Legacy L AWD wagon. The roof rails, are shorter (front to back) than the Outback, and newer Legacy Wagons. Our Yakima bike tray sticks out the back, and our hatch hits it when we raise it up.

Could I swap for Outback roof rails fairly easily? Oregon pick and pull lots tend to have a couple Outbacks. My guess is, the rear feet would match up, but I would need to measure and drill new holes up front for longer rails?

Just curious, if it might be easily do-able. (I can always get some Yakima Q towers for the front) but would like to consider this option too.

ciao

I think someone on here was trying to make the outback rails fit a sedan. A few things pointed out were they would need to be shortened and also they have a different curve.

BTW Welcome to the forum! Another portland subi owner I see haha

Are they fork mount bike carriers? I run my 'backwards'. With the fork at the rear of the car.

One of the main reasons I do this is to keep road debris out of the handlebar controls - brake levers, shifters etc. I hate having dead flies etc all over the front of the bike.

That might solve your issue?

That was me, but it was a wagon rack, not an Outback rack, on a sedan. Here's the thread.

That project got derailed when I found a used Thule rack on craigslist for next to nothing, but I still think it could be done!

I'm going to guess that the answer to your question is that it wouldn't be that easy. The reason being that the Outback has that hump on the roof to give it some extra height. Here's a few pictures of the front, middle and back mounts. As you can see - especially the front mount follows the curve of that hump, so IDK if it would fit a regular wagon without some tweaking.
