AWD Fanatic
Wanted to do something to the grill, but never liked the open mesh look with the floating emblem. Sprayed the grill and fog bezels, looks like factory black plastic. What do you guys think ? http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs482.ash1/26409_1396377632417_1321526751_1150242_3818145_n.jpg http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs502.snc3/26409_1396377592416_1321526751_1150241_253385_n.jpg http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs482.ash1/26409_1396377512414_1321526751_1150240_7368439_n.jpg http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs482.snc3/26409_1395476289884_1321526751_1148326_4150182_n.jpg http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs482.snc3/26409_1395476169881_1321526751_1148324_6390355_n.jpg
Mega Users LieutenantDan Posted March 5, 2010 Mega Users Share Posted March 5, 2010 Looks awesome. I did my fog surrounds and a mesh grill all painted semi-gloss black. After this winter they'll need a redo. Def. going more towards flat black this time around. I can't tell if the fog surrounds look better body color or black. I like the black with my lamin-x yellow fogs though
tjbev21
looks good, im between doing my bezels... did you remove you front emblem to paint the chrome ring around it or did you just tape it off?
John M
Welcome to December 2004 In my case I used a metallic paint to match the inside of my headlights. Newer cars don't have that so it's not relevant. I photoshopped the fog surrounds and didn't like the way it looked on a red car so I left them stock. rock2534
I like it, I wouldn't mind doing something like that. Did you use any particular type of paint? Do you think it will chip easily, requiring it to be repainted?
scoobydoobie
Looks good. I did my grill in satin black but am undecided on whether I want to do the fogs bezels as well. Can you take a pic of the whole front end in the daylight when you get the chance?

Just taped it off - then cut around the groove with an exacto knife http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs482.snc3/26409_1395476289884_1321526751_1148326_4150182_n.jpg

Do you think it will chip easily, requiring it to be repainted? Used the Rustoleum - find it at any home depot. It should last, I did about 4 coats letting it dry for a while inbetween. Sanding it down to begin with very well is the most important part http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs482.snc3/26409_1395469489714_1321526751_1148318_2741106_n.jpg

I didn't fully sand off any chrome - just scuffed it up and then went over it with a fine grit sandpaper to smooth it down. I didn't prime anything either, just 3 or 4 light coats

kober1
Seen it a couple times before but looks like you did a very good job. Fogs are growing on me but I really like the grill (not a fan of the floating emblem either).

RedDawg
cool i'll just scuff up the chrome then instead of killing myself trying to sand it all off.

bigsherm77
Okay, I'm going to give this a shot. How hard is it to get the grill off? Could you also let me know what grit sandpaper you used? I've never painted anything before and don't want to screw up my stock grill. thanks.
AWD Fanatic
im doing this on the weekend, how did you remove the fog bezels? Just a regular flathead screwdriver - there's 2 slots on the top, and one or two on the side and bottom. It's just plastic clips holding it in place, just wiggle them a little

I've never painted anything before and don't want to screw up my stock grill. thanks. i'm not that talented either when it comes to this. it's only 2 10mm bolts, 2 plastic push snap pins, and 4 little clips. - very easy. as for the paper i bought an regular 3 step kit from home depot - yellow, green, and orange. you get 2 small sheets of each - only used only did 2 steps. 60-80 coarse grit go over very well, get all the curves and nooks. then i used the fine grit and went over the whole thing again. then i brushed all the dust off, and wiped it with a wet paper towel and let it dry. I then took painters tape and taped over the entire center emblem. inbetween the blue star logo and the chrome ring is a small gap - slip an exacto blade in here all the way around and cut the tape. keep the center taped and expose all the chrome ring around the edge. then use the sandpaper again - same steps: coarse, then fine. I did this after i taped it off to avoid scraping the emblem with the sandpaper. then 3 or 4 light EVEN sprays at different angles - allowing to dry 15 to 20 minutes inbetween coats and done. took maybe 90 minutes start to finish
