Tip on oil leak for 2001 Outback ej25 5-speed

Hey all,

My in-laws 2001 outback has an oil leak. All I could do today was peer down into the hood and look around the underside a bit, but I found the area that it's coming out....

Moving towards the back of the car, I passed the oil filter and oil pan drain plug (both dry) and came across a flat piece of metal with two very minor humps in it right behind the oil pan.

I literally could not see around back there and couldn't tell what the part was, if the oil was leaking from it, or from somewhere else. I can't find any pictures online to circle the area and provide it here.

I'm wondering though if anyone could tell me any likely cases for an oil leak in that area. From under the hood, I could not see any visible signs of oil leaks at any part.

This is definitely motor oil, as confirmed by my detailed analysis of the smudge my finger got when wiping the wet garage floor and the smell :)

Thanks,

Joe

P.s. I'll put it up next weekend and check it out and see if I can repair it for them. The car needs a new clutch soon and a variety of other work....shame, only about 60k on it and it just needs someone to give it some TLC.

Sounds like it is coming from the rear wrist pin cover aka the rear separator plate which is on the back side of the block between the block and firewall. This usually leaks down to right behind the oil pan.

It may just need to be resealed.

So I went over to check it out this weekend...and they replaced it with a 2009 Outback (alloy wheels, automatic, seat heaters) $20.7k with 16k miles on it. And they got 7.5k for their 2002 base 5-speed Outback with 62k on it and a slipping clutch, oil leak, and front brakes needing to be done.

What is the world coming too? :)
