Hanslo
I was trying to take off the top nut on one of my front struts and thought I was making good progress. I then realized I was just spinning the strut shaft. I must have spun it around at least 10 full revolutions. Is this harmful? I was working on an assembled stock GT(KYB) suspension unit in my basement - not on the car. Thanks, Hanslo
zenfamily
No, it shouldn't be an issue
andyarmada
No. I believe the 2005+ Legacys have bearings built into the top hat between the spring and the hat, that let's it spin. Should be fine.
naimouasta
i think all tophats can spin. atleast for the fronts. thats how the wheel turns.
Hanslo
The tophat does spin freely on top of the assembly. What i'm talking about is the shaft of the strut was turning inside the strut housing as I was trying to loosen the top nut. I knew to watch for this and even had my index finger touching the shaft but the shaft is so smooth I didn't feel it moving under my finger. zenfamily
You should still be good to go. I had Konis before, and spun the shaft.

GTTuner
As long as you didn't spin it up with an impact gun your fine. You could turn it all day by hand and it wouldn't hurt it.

Ok, good. No impact wrench just by hand. I now have a brand new shiny pass-through socket wrench set - very helpful. Hanslo
