Now that people have them...where's the good stuff?

You're welcome Kevin. Glad you were able to glean the info you were looking for. Shall I do the front as well? I think I know what you're talking about. I do know what the sway bar is but the rest of it is a bit foreign. Looking forward to learning more though! -Ian
I would NEVER turn down more chassis porno, Ian. I was more interested in the rear, but the front would also be verrry nice, sir. Many thanks in advance. :D Kevin
Legacy up-skirt shots. Thanks for the nice pics Ian. I'm glad to see the ride height front and rear is almost even, with the rear being a tad higher. I really don't mind this change from the WRX, it is much better asthetic wise. The only thing I'd request is some exhaust piping shots. Although I'm sure it's probably the same as the JDM layout, I just want to see what exactly e're dealing with dealing with here. :) That is...if you don't mind embarrassing yourself under the car again!

Honestly, I am having a hard time believing that is a subaru at all. Everything seems so foreign to the subaru world. All the things you described about ride height, and then the interior quality, engine cover... and a 5MT with the limited package. I AM FREAKIN' OUT! Nice pics! can you take one from the front seat looking through the back of the wagon with the hatch closed? almost as if you were looking over your right shoulder for a lane change. I have never driven a wagon.. i wanna see

And from perusing those pictures again, the first vendor that offers something to "stiffen" the rear chassis, I am personally going to smack upside the head. Kevin

Any perspective on acceleration off-the-line? I have read a number of posts talking about a dead space off the line till 3,000rpms. One post even referred to a scary pause from start crossing traffic. Is the GT Turbo MT or AT any slower off line than normal aspirated Legacy? Is this just chatter about no hot torque off line or is there a dangerous pause for crossing traffic? Even short freeway ramps should not be a problem, but city driving where you must quickly go from dead stop to cross in-front of on-coming traffic would be concern. My first V6 Volvo had a strange lag off line that was scary at times. Having experienced the new Volvo Turbos, I experienced no problem and the posts about soft gas peddle delivering quickest start vs smash pedal echos my experience with turbos. Also, acceleration 101 post was great reading for me and my sons. So, what is correct perspective on off-the-line acceleration? Normal, but no excitement till 3,000 rpm an unsettling pause?

Of course, the "correct perspective" as you call it can only be your "own perspective". The review you read was that person's perspective. Drive the car and you'll know if it's right (or not) for you. For me, acceleration is quite quick indeed. I've got the manual tranny and 1st is geared quite short (meaning revs build quick) so it gets up and gets going nicely. As I'm trying to observe the recommended break in of the engine I'm trying to keep it below 4K rpms and I find myself having to shift into 2nd almost before I get across an intersection. The only time I feel the dead space I think you're referring to is when rpms are below 2300 or so, or I'm in the wrong (read too high) a gear and I'm going up a fairly steep hill. But honestly I don't hardly notice it at all. Again, I'm coming from a Honda 4 cyclinder with VTEC not a 6 cyclinder or 8 cylinder where there's lots of torque down in the low revs. That engine was worse for lag as the VTEC didn't kick in until 3500 rpms at least so I'm used to the feeling of a turbo even though I've never owned one!  The GT is definitely NOT any slower off the line than a NA Legacy. They're both 2.5 liters until the turbo kicks in. Maybe that's what the reviewers you're referring to are talking about. It feels "normal" until the turbo begins to spool up. Then it's a rocket ship. Then again, the spool up is quite smooth and linear. The WRX and Forester XT test drives I remember weren't nearly as smooth as this engine. Cheers! -Ian

Thanks Goneskiian. Your experience with Leg GT answered concern created by other posts. I am still about 2 weeks away from being able to test a GT and thought a new owner could comment on reality of off-line acceleration. I did test NA Leg and there was no problem with off line pause. Only a problem if you are looking for a launch. Helpful thanks.
Ian... can you comment on steering feel/weight, and other handling attributes? (body roll, turn-in, etc)
Dave - The steering feels quite responsive. Even with the quick ratio it doesn't feel "twitchy" on the highway to me. Body roll seems minimal. There is some there, but of course I've got that huge moonroof in the worst spot as far as weight goes. Seems to turn in pretty quick. Of course, all my impressions need a big disclaimer at the bottom: "In no way shape or form should I be considered an experienced automobile reviewer. I've not driven very many cars. Those that I have driven were not pushed anywhere near their handling limits."  I really need a performance driving course and some track/autocross time under my belt. That way you guys here will be able to take my impressions with a slightly smaller grain of salt. :)  -Ian

Well, at-the-limit handling is one thing, but if you bought a Leg GT, then chances are you know what you like in the feel/performance of a car. And that's good enough for me. Plus, you're a fellow roadie... can't be all bad ;) One last one... what does the effort of the steering feel like? Is it Buick-like overboosted? Or somewhat heavy? Thanks.
