I have no paint-match painting experience; this would be my first.

For all the painting, I used a spray paint handle which really helped.

I washed the grill with soapy water and dried. I then sanded what I could with 2000 grit sand paper to rough it up a bit. Then I wiped it down with a damp rag. Then I wiped it down with a DupliColor prep wipe (local auto parts store)

Then I dried it with a soft rag and a hair dryer on low. Then I put on 3 light coats of DupliColor adhesion promoter, 3 minutes apart (per the instructions)

Within 10 minutes of the last adhesion promoter coat, I put on the first coat of PaintScratch DGM. These were the instructions on the adhesion promoter. I put on about 4 light layers of DGM a few minutes apart. Multiple light layers is the best way.

After the last coat of DGM I waited a while until I could touch the paint. Then I applied 4 light coats of Rustoleum Lacquer. It was cheaper than what they have at PaintScratch.com, and from what I can tell, they just resell another brand's clear lacquer anyway.

The nozzle was not great so the clear coat orange peeled, but I will use some rubbing compound to try to buff it a little smoother. Its not bad... but could be better.

I also painted the emblem. I sanded the back in stages: 320, 400, 2000, 2000 wet. It was crystal clear when I was done. Then I taped off the front of the emblem and painted the back with a couple of light coats.

It was all pretty easy and I am happy with the results:

it is just one thread or so away:

hope that helps all who had a hard time knowing what to look for. :spin:

But it won't always be one or so threads away.

Where'd you get the grille? How much?

why should I "look" for something? just post a link in your thread how hard is that?

its just common courtesy if you're going to make a walk-through (which is quite good btw!!) that you should post pictures of the results in that thread OR link to a thread with those pics.

I thought about painting my grill, I still want to.. but right now I've got other financial responsibilities.

a lot of work but it looks great, more pics of it?

Not a lot of work.

Total prep - 20 minutes

Adhesion promoter - 2 minutes shaking 12 minutes painting multiple coats 3 minutes apart - call it 15 minutes

DGM base coat - same as above - call it 15 minutes

Clear coat - more coats with more time in between - call it 20 minutes.

EDIT - it took about 1.5 hours now that I look back at how the night went.... but whatever, you get the point. Its less work than you think. All the cans mentioned not waiting too long between coats... not sure why, in the past I always waited much longer. So, I hope it holds up. I figured the instructions were my best option since I don't know what I am doing.

And you can do other things between coats like tidy your tools (which is what I did). So, not a lot of work. for something simple like a grill, I am not sure why you would need more than 20 minutes prep. That being said, this grill was in perfect condition... so I was just roughing it up and cleaning it.

I got the grill from another forum member. Its a JDM grill from an Outback. I wanted something unique. I think I would like the stock grill with the chrome painted DGM as well, but a lot of people have done something similar. I like to test out new stuff, and I am glad with how this one turned out.

Thanks for all the comments.

UPDATE

I spent a lot of time using rubbing compound, then polishing compound, then wax... and the clearcoat is looking better. The hard part is all the small nooks and crannies.

I think you can just just about any professional lacquer and with enough buffing you can make it look pretty good.

Now onto the headlights....
