Kipper
The mechanic that did my timing belt three years ago, stripped the threads in the housing for the timing belt tensioner!! The bolt is in good shape but the threads in the housing are messed up. Whats a good fix for reparing these threads????
Platinum_Racing
Get a metric tap and die set and see if you can re-thread the existing threads. If you don't have access to a metric tap and die set, take one of the old bolts and set it on a table standing straight up and down, standing on the head of the bolt.. With a Dremel tool or an air grinder with a cutoff wheel, put a slot in the screw, from top to bottom, right up the threads. Now, reinstall the bolt and it should cut new threads. It's a good idea to get a new bolt after this. If the threads don't take well to being re-tapped with the slotted bolt trick, drill the hole out with a metric drill bit one size larger than the last one, get a metric tap and die set, and re-thread the new hole, making it one size larger than it was before. When it's all done, get yourself a new bolt that corresponds to the thread type and size of the hole you tapped out. Be careful though, this can be tricky. It's best to go slow and take your time. Kipper
Thanks for the advice! Ill try that. This is getting old because I live above a resturant and I am doing all this stuff out in the parking lot. I have 272K on this car and I just want it to last one winter, up here in VT. Platinum_Racing
Drive it till the wheels fall off, that's what I plan on doing with mine...
jamal
Not sure I would trust re-threading that. Find another bracket somewhere or install a helicoil.
DN1911
i would use a heli-coil or the one i prefer the most, a Keysert http://www.newmantools.com/key.htm. they are usually available at most specialty hardware stores
