RaGe
So the other day i am heading to work. got in town, and noticed my EGT gauge isnt working. Kinda pissed about that, but on my way to work and i cant do anything about it. thinking maybe the probe went bad. So i take off from the stop sign, and my battery light comes on. thinking WTF? Figured i would hurry up and get to the gas station. Start to turn and WTF??? No power steering. get to the gas station, pop the hood, and see the shredded belt. Ok, no big deal. that would explain the no PS, and the battery light. Figured i would just let the car sit, and replace the belt the next morning when i got off of work. Waiting on my ride to work, and start looking more. this is what i seen.... pic 1 http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i171/Crucifix79/belt010.jpg pic 2 http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i171/Crucifix79/belt011.jpg pic 3 http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i171/Crucifix79/belt012.jpg pic 4 http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i171/Crucifix79/belt013.jpg pic 5 http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i171/Crucifix79/belt014.jpg pic 6 http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i171/Crucifix79/belt015.jpg pic 2=The A/C comressor. The wiring harness plugs into the actuall comressor. when the belt shredded, it went off of the A/C pulley but managed to stay on the main pulley and just rub/burn off the plastic electrical connector to the comressor. end result of this is replacing the comressor. you cannot get by with just replacing the wiring harness as the connector to the compressor was burned off from the belt. $471.00 pic 3=the timing belt outer cover. When the belt came off it was out of alignment causing it to rub holes in the cover. pic 4= my guess is that not only did the belt give away, but the main pulley gave way as well. it seperated from the outer ring/delamination. pic 5=a better picture of the main pulley/seperated from the outer ring/delamination. pic 6= the shredded belt. it couldnt have just broke. it had to shred causing me a few hundred in repairs. Need a new A/C comressor with wiring harness. New Outer timing belt cover. new belts. due to having 98K i am going to replace the T-belt, with tensionors. new Water pump. new T-stat w/ housing. and a new EGT probe with wiring. new Main pulley. So take my unfortunate mishap as a lesson. if you have a stock main pulley, i would strongly suggest replacing it with another light weight pulley. keep checking yoru belts too. i checked mine the other day, and it was in good shape. no slack or cracks. guess that is just my run of the luck. well, enjoy the pics though. I know this has been covered but thought that i would share it anyways as a friendly reminder to check your shit. OTM. Sorry I didn't mean to start a war which mainly forum people is all about . Impulse
ahdang. wheres that little green strip of metal over the alternator that prevents belt whipping when snapped? i thought that was supposed to help with the whipping/shredding belt?
RaGe
i was good on the alternator side. its the a/c compressor side that done the most damage. regaurdless of the shroud being there or not, the belt did not beat anything to death. it slid off of the A/C pulley but managed to stay on teh main pulley. it created the friction needed to melt the plastic electric connector along with melting the T-belt outer cover. Balrock
blah, blah, blah....are you going to be ready for H.H.? If you are not going, then neither am I. It just would not be the same with my little beyatch not there. I would be sad. Oh yeah...sorry about the damage...should have bought a Honda. LOL That's what I was told when I got towed once. pillboy
Sorry dude. I would not expect an OEM part to fail like that at that mileage. This is the crank pulley (aka harmonic balancer), correct? What are you replacing it with? It is still ugly.
RaGe
with a lightweight pulley. thinking about dissecting the A/C compressor and test my electrical skills/ soldering skills. OTM. lucas569
with a lightweight pulley. thinking about dissecting the A/C compressor and test my electrical skills/ soldering skills. let ME know how that goes! very intirested in the results! btw subaru engineers kudos on the asshat design! RaGe
no kidding. OEM belt too. when this belt goes, it goes in pieces, and shreds and will tell crap up. its just a matter on how much it will tear up. OTM. ltrain
Just for reference: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114549 http://legacygt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2583605&postcount=29 I picked up a used a/c compressor from car-part.com its basically an online database for salvage yards. I think I found an '06 LGT compressor for $125 to replace the one on the '05. As mentioned before, those of you going up in the miles with your LGT's it may be a good opportunity to upgrade to a lightweight pulley. If not for performance think of it more for preventative maintenance. -L
RaGe
very good info ltrain. will def check into that. thank you. OTM. Sorry I didn't mean to start a war which mainly forum people is all about .
RaGe
RaGe...what pulley did you go with? havent went with anything yet. but had my eyes set on the 97 dollar perrin, the cheaper one. ltrain
with a lightweight pulley. thinking about dissecting the A/C compressor and test my electrical skills/ soldering skills. Rage, if you haven't gotten the compressor yet and are trying to figure out how to reconnect the harness. Here is an idea... I am guessing the compressor side of the harness is all cut into and crusty. There are only 2 wires there since it is just a simple switch. Try to scrape away all the melted plastic on the compressor side harness. Then you will see that it is just 2 male spade connectors in the harness itself. What you can do is just snip the wires and crimp 2 small female spade connectors and plug them into the exposed spades on the crusty side ac compressor harness. This might get you by until you can get a compressor and new harness. It will probably save you the cost of the compressor, new ac o rings, R134 refrigerant, and harness...for now. -L
