I am guessing Discount Tire will do their $100 off per tire set, and $100 off per rim set very soon...

Wow okay I'll watch carefully. I am planning on using Discount for both my LGT and Jeep tire/wheel sets.

Alright pulled the trigger and purchased these... will keep fingers crossed that these fit over my 328x28 Stoptechs. Thanks for the tip, enthusiast!

  • 2 weeks later...

Alright the wheels came yesterday and I took one out of the box... looks nice.. but WIDE(?!?). I really want to put relatively narrow snow's on these 17x8's. I measured the wheel and it is a full 9" across. Maybe I don't have a clear understanding on how wheels are measured... this doesn't seem right...

Okay... maybe this clears it up for me... now time to see if they clear the Stoptechs!

To determine the width of the rim, measure from bead seat to bead seat across the wheel, not from lip to lip. The "Bead Seat" is the part of the wheel where the bead of the tire sits once the tire is inflated.

Whoa.. looks like it is barely fitting.. I put a flashlight behind the wheel and you have to be dead perpindicular to the wheel to be able to see the gap b/w rotor and wheel. It is 1/32" or less. Looks like these will work. Whew. Now I've got to figure out the rubber part of the equation.

Alright now onto the rubber part of the equation...

From Xenonk's thread, I see my width options are 215, 225, 235, and 245.

I want to go as narrow as I can for snows but I want a little tire overhang and don't want to have the sidewall very taut... so it looks like 225's are the obvious choice for width here.

Now, using this tire calculator and plugging in my existing tires on the left, it becomes pretty clear that I will need a 45 series tire to maintain the same tire height as I have now. I am lowered on s-techs and when i got my new summer tires last year the fenders shaved them every once in a while when I went over bumps, so I know absolutely for sure I cannot exceed my current 25.1" diameter (as calculated and confirmed by measurement). I want as much sidewall as possible for snows... which brings me to the conclusion that I need to shop for 225/45/17's... hopefully that is a cheap size... now to find out what's available....

i gotta friend that works at discount so i MIGHT be able to get a nice discount :D

decisions decisions..... its hard to judge how a set of wheels will look on a car without having the wheels being on it....

i also like these... :( LOL

I've been doing some tire research now.. I've decided that I want to tip the scale in road vs. snow balance in favor of snow/ice performance...meaning I'm looking more in the "studless snow & ice" category and less in the "performance snow" category... I really didn't enjoy spinning down I-70 sideways at 55mph last winter... (okay speed maybe just might have played a role there, but anyways I want max traction/control on ice) and studless of course. My top contenders in 225/45/17 are:

$136 Dunlop Graspic DS-3 (brand new tire)

$137 Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60

$150 Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60 (brand new tire)

Tough deciding...

judging by the apearance only... doesnt the dunlop's seem like they would give the best traction in the snow?? i could be wrong but i would probably go with the dunlops.... though i never heard anything bad about the blizzak's either... the lm-60 would be considered "performance snow" category....
