Charging phone with engine off.

Can this be re-programmed? (should have been my first question)

its not programed to do this.. its physically wired liek this

but yes you can rewire it... but like ^ said, you will drain the battery...

i feel like it would just be easier to buy an "aux" socket from pep boys and something.. and then nicely wire it directly to your battery from inside the car. (with a fuse of course) cuz then you could have a dedicated phone charger all the time. hah. but of course that would kill your battery if you ever forget it for long enough.

also...

why dont you just charge it before the drive to work.... like at night or something.. that is if you work in the morning...

and how will charging your phone after the car is off help if you have to park your car and leave it anyway...? unless you plan on leaving it in your car to charge while youre gone...

no, you will drain your car battery and thus be stranded after work.

Incorrect - you would have to have a phenominally weak battery

for 8 hours on a cell-phone charger to drain it.

You COULD do like me and add an always-on cigarette lighter outlet.

Use this cool socket:

... and mount in on the passenger side of the center console forward

of the seat (kinda below and to the side of the ashtray) or whereever

else floats your boat.

If you inspect the wiring diagrams, certainly there's an always-hot

12vdc wire back there somewhere (one on the head-unit harness).

I ran a dedicated 8-guage wire direct from the battery, like you

would for an amplifier, because I wanted to be able to run a

100-200watt inverter (yes, that WOULD drain the battery if left

running very long !)

This is probably more than you wanted to know and more than you

want to do ...

I've owned a lot of cars where its factory hard wired to the battery.

Since personal electronics stop charging when full, it would take weeks or months to drain the car battery.

This was bad design logic on the part of Subaru.
