Purpose of front license plate??

Recommended Posts

Nice links Tsi+WRX, I wish there was a plate that just said "Legacy" or "Subaru" in the front, but there are only ones that say STi... and I don't have an STi. I wonder if I could take a flat plate... and somehow etch things in it myself? Sounds difficult to do it well.

If it is the law then we should follow it.

People with skillz bend the law and don't get caught.;)

Robots follow the law without thinking about whether it's reasonable or not.

No front plates required in AZ for quite some time. I got a vanity plate and they gave me two, but I don't know if that's the case anymore because that was 10 years ago. They recently ditched the traditional embossed plates for a flat silk screened version because it was cheaper.

Since I had such a hard time finding the car I wanted, they were going to bring me in one from another state, which had me hoping they hadn't put a licence plate bracket on the front bumper. Luckily, I ended up getting one off the lot at the local dealer so it wasn't an issue.

I have taken a hinge and mounted it to a piece of aluminum and mounted that AL up under the bumper cover. That way you don't have holes in the front of the car when you remove it. The hinge lets the plate swing so the FMIC get's more air.

Did that for our yellow civic that the cops loved...;(

Still have the hinge set up in case I need it for my Legacy, notice where I live.

Front plate has been a requirement for about 10 years here in CO but I've NEVER put one on my car nor will I. I refuse to drill into my bumper. That's absurd. However, I do get pulled over periodically for not having it. Usually warnings, sometimes tickets. But, the tickets are only $50, so it's worth it to me. *shrugs*

I got pulled over in my wife's car, and the officer asked why I had no front plate. I reached behind the driver's seat and pulled out a horribly mangled plate and bracket. I told him the plate was damaged in a parking lot hit/run and the dealership was out of stock on the plate bracket. He advised I fix it ASAP and let me go.

Well, the dealer WAS out of stock, and the plate HAD been knocked off in a parking lot hit/run - I just didn't volunteer the fact that the hit/run happened 2 years ago. ;)

Haha. I do the same thing. I have the second plate under my passenger seat. I always tell them I'm waiting for some custom ordered bracket from Subaru. Funny thing is, I've been pulled over by the same officers more than once and they fail to remember I guess.

i dont mind having a front license plate

but the thing is when i go FMIC its gonna block some major air flow

sure we can put it on the side of the bumper like the EVOs

but what about the fogs?

seems to me like im in a pickle

Put the plate on hinges. That will take care of the airflow issues.

At least there is no law as far as I know that says that you aren't permitted to have the plate on hinges.

And with all the speed cameras around here I'm starting to consider it... :spin:

That's not a bad idea. As long as the hinges are /EXTRA/ loose. Then again, you'd need to come up with some way to keep it from flapping noisily against your bumper too...

SO...can someone please explain what the purpose of having a front plate is? And why a good number of states don't require one, but others do. Is it that they do their job as law enforcement officers better than the states that require a front one??

I'll tell you this. I've prosecuted a number of hit and runs.

A large number of the IDs were based on the front plate only. A similar amount were, surpisingly enough, from when the hit and runner left his from plate (and often his bumper). I'd estimate at least 50% of H&R are solved because of front plates.

Honestly (as victim of a H&R where the suspect was caught), that is worth it to me.

^^ I won't argue that. I've been hit and run on before myself and it does suck. However, I'm simply not the kind of person to do that. I'll take my lumps if I make a mistake. I completely understand the reasoning behind a front plate, I just don't want to drill into my bumper for one...

They require front in MN too. I can't wait to move back to PA where you only need the rear.

The front plate really disrupts the lines of the car. I would take it off, but I already have a ticket this year and am hella spooked by da po.

Don't count on the different "presentation" to defeat cameras.

Some utilize video technology, yet others use both front and rear.

There's, so far, no true defeat for cameras - unless you're willing to go the way of an actuated/active system.

I don't run reds.

Heck, I rarely even run yellows when they're yellow (not "orange"). :)

I just don't like the entire idea of these cameras, for many moral/ethical reasons.

I've been on the look-out for true ways to defeat these cameras for a long, long time.

Nothing works, reliably, outside of things that can actually OBSCURE your plate FULLY. And even in this respect, many such systems, like plate-flippers or electrochromatic plate covers, are either sold in "kit" form (the former) or have seen such shady (no pun intended) retail that they've -ALL- been nothing but vaporware. :( No-one, and I mean no-one, in the speed-detection countermeasures community have been able to get their hands on one of those electrochromatic plate covers, in a "retail" manner.

Trust me on this, bruddah (and everyone else).

Don't think, for even one minute, that the various advertised plate-covers, sprays, and other devices (including the VF PhotoJammer [of either generations], which, BTW, is completely vulnerable to any system that either uses ambient light-amplification or IR-photography, or video-technology), is a sure-bet.

None are, and I'm telling you the harsh truth, straight-up, and all carry significant secondary risks.

Your best defense for these cameras is to upload to your GPS one of the many available free/shared or for-fee POI databases that cover such concerns, or, alternatively, to use a secondary device such as the SpeedCheetah C100 or GPS-Mirror, or a GPS-enabled, database-matched radar-detectors, such as those from Escort and Beltronics, to alert you to these locations, BEFORE you even get to them.

Just be careful of which such database/POI program you select, as some are much less reliable than others, and yet others are dangerously out-dated.

:)

find someone near you that does good vinyl stickers and take in your front plate copy/trim then put it where ever you want on the front bumper. I think they charged me 15 bucks.. and it looks cherry. unless you get within 10 ft of it you cant tell the difference..

also place the license "sticker" on the drivers side as most photo radar are coming from front pass side.... not much value with new photo vans though that also take a photo from the rear... oh well unless you get he polarized cover on the rear..

What are the consequences for getting caught with the polarized cover over the plate in CO?

^ Forget the consequences.

Just make sure that such covers work, in the first place, for the cameras that you want to defeat.

No sense bearing the consequences, if the defeat measure doesn't work, in the first place. :)
