Alrighty, I posted these in the CarPC thread sticky at the top already, but this is the thread for my CarPC build.

Mar Mini PPC G4 1.25 GHz w/ 120GB HDD, 1GB RAM - $100

Carnetix CNX-P1900 w/ MacPac cables - $90

Carnetix CNX-P5V - $25

JDM 1DIN Fascia - $125 from Rallitek

7" VGA USB Touchscreen - $250 from eBay

8 AWG amp install kit - $10

Powered USB Hub - $5

Headphone splitter for aux-in - $3

Bluetooth 2.0 USB Dongle - $10

Bluetooth GPS - $20

Already had a bluetooth GPS hardwired under the hood, currently using my Dell Axim X51V, so this CarPC will take over navigation duties.

Install pictures and etc to come as I obtain parts.

Anticipated completion date: By the end of March 2009.

Here's the little sucker that's going in.

Here is the Carnetix CNX-P1900 Power Supply. It is much smaller than I imagined it would be, and will be easy to integrate behind the dash.

Here is a close up of the board inside.

Jumpers have been set according to what I want in my installation, it may vary for you.

1) Deadman Timer on: This will shut off all power connected to the supply after 72 hours.

2) Hibernate/Standby: I had to choose standby, as the Mac Mini does not have hibernate.

3) Shutdown delay: 6 seconds or 15 minutes - I chose 15 minutes. There are times I do not step away from the car for too long.

4) Primary Output Voltage: 18V, the Mac Mini requires 18.5, but the power supply actually outputs 0.5V more than jumper setting.

5) Secondary Output Voltage: 12V, for the screen.

6) Secondary Output Control: Set to DLYON, so that the screen will come on with the car and Mac, but shut off completely when ignition is removed. If it is set to the other setting, the screen would stay on, since the Mac is in sleep mode and power is being sent there.

I'm absolutely stoked. When the Carnetix came in today, I honestly thought that it wasn't packed in there. I was expecting a huge DC/DC adapter, but was pleasantly surprised. That thing is tiny! My laptop in the background is only a 12" model, so it offers some scale for size.

just make sure to keep it cooled. i see a lot of vent space for it being that small. My guess, it gets hot...

they may have done the vents for aesthetics, but i bet never planned on it being in a confined space. whatever the reason, be safe and get more air to it.

didn't you say you were planning on putting it behind the dash? or in the glovebox or something?

Yea it's going to be going behind the dash. I'll mock it up on my desk and test it for a long period of time and see what kind of temp's I'm dealing with here.

Currently testing the Ice3 2.0 frontend for the Mac. So far it looks like it'll work out fine. Just seems like my Mac Mini is extremely underpowered to run Tiger and this frontend, or any frontend for that matter. I'm going to try installing older versions of Mac OSX, like Jaguar, Panther, or Tiger and see if I get any speed improvements. I definitely don't need the latest and greatest Mac OSX on this CarPC.

Might have a video of the frontend up later.

Looks like Ice3 only works on Leopard due to Coverflow. I'll have to live with it.

This is the main screen I made for it. It'll probably change as I take some better pictures and replace the generic ones. I tried to get the glowing edges close to the red that the dashboard is at night.

I dont like the interface. What if I dont want to listen to U2? (looks like bono screaming into a mic.)

I would want the interface to behave like other Apple products. You can "flick" scroll things. Doesn't seem like Ice^3 allows that.

Not to mention the major lack of GPS support for apple products.

But a Mac Mini and an iPhone would be awesome. Tethered 3G internet everywhere. You could listen to internet radio, look things up on Wikipedia, Google Maps, make a track log, watch YouTube, all kinds of things.

Ideally, a screen and some processor that amplifies what the iPhone can already do would be the best setup.

actually just an iphone would do that..

thats what I do now.. windhshield mount with (right now) a messy power and audio wire=gps, internet, weather, email, speaker phone internet radio and mp3s.

and when I get there.. I can take it off the cradle and get walking directions to my destination.

 carputers but my iphone has done an excellent job of being a portable substitute that is vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to person moveable.

The small screen size is bothersome though. A larger screen that simply operated the iPhone would be ideal.

A carputer only makes sense for me if you have double monitors. Permanent GPS on the top, and A/V stuff on the lower.

How do you get audio from the computer to the speakers though? That's something that I have yet to find out.
