LCD mod for cubby

So I really felt the need to have a LCD in place of the cubby. I started with buying an extra vent/cubby dash insert.

Then cut the cross beam that separates the cubby form the trip computer.

Then I made some plastic inserts to hold the 7" LCD at more of an upright angle. With out the plastic inserts the LDC would face at an upwards angle.

Don't mind the slots. Those were just in the plastic I used. I used a stackable mail trey because it had the bend I needed for the corners.

So now the LCD simply rests against the brackets I made and rests on the bottom as well.

I used the two top screw mounts for the vent and added one at the bottom with this V bracket that I made.

I have an iPhone and AV cord to plug into the LCD. At some point I hope to find a GPS with a video out that I can hook up to the LCD.

I will add more photos when I am finished.

Oh yeah!

So the glue I used is called Plastic Welder. It is a two part epoxy type stuff.

Keep this stuff in mind for any plastic project you do. This stuff is down right the best epoxy/glue for plastic.

Extra vent/cubby console $25

LCD $65

Plastic $1

Epoxy $4.15

Total with out paint =$95.15

Ok I forgot to mention BUDGET! I did all of the for $100 and I shouldn't of spent that but I really wanted to do it.

At this point I do not have the need for a computer in my car other than the one that makes it go.

I only have a 2.5I and I do not race.

I simply wanted a one LCD that was in a central location that everyone in the car could see for the 3 to 4 times I drive up to the ski area every week.

This is a simple $65 LCD screen that I can add whatever I want in the future or even replace because the hard part is already done.

I found it on eBay. It and I quote was a used display. I think I lucked out on the one as most of the 7" at the $100 to $150 range have a resolution of 480x234 and the one I got is 854 x 480. It is still low but for movies and my budget it will do.

You know sebberry, I tried so many different combos when searching for modding the cubby and got nothing. Of course I did not search for "car pc" I tried cubby mod, lcd cubby, lcd mod, and like ten other variations. All came up with were people modding a little GPS unit in the cubby.

Thanks for the link! I really wish I could have found it before my project. Although it may have deterred me from what I did. Looks like that stuff is way move involved than what I wanted to get my self into.

I like your set up NSFW I also like how you made the screen more verticle than most of the other set ups I have seen. I don't understand why so many people put so much work into some really nice set ups but have the screen pointing at the ceiling.

Thanks for the complement but what do not have is extra cash for a touchscreen and another laptop.

Actually BMac1203 (a member here, though I haven't seen him post in a while) gets the credit for that. He made a bezel just like it for his own car, I think you'll find it in the carpc thread. I liked the design too, so I asked if he'd be willing to make another one...

I understand about the money, but if you decide to go this route later, I'll be happy to answer any questions about my setup.

NFSW I only know of one guy that used hard boots on an Avalanche Kick FS board. That photo must be a later one like after he stopped wearing neon yellow and pink maybe circa 1991. I was just watching Snowboarders In Exile last night sitting here waiting for it to snow.

I did kind of a driveby read of the thread so I'm going to lazy ask.

What paint did you use and how does it compare to the stock finish?

The work looks great but I found it impossible to get a stock finish on my kit, and that was a big reason I took my entire setup out.

that and.. well it was costing me a fortune.

Yup, that's him. :) I looked for pics with more neon but they didn't look as good when shrunk down.

Ok and done. At some point I would love to install a touch screen monitor with a laptop mounted under the seat but I do not have the fundage yet.

Speaking of Damien Sanders, I just stumbled over this...

And back on topic:

I'm wondering too. The finish looks really good.

I got pretty lucky. This paint is made for plastic and just so happens to look exactly the same as the stock paint with exception to the original was a soft touch paint and this is hard touch.

ya know, I tried to find that stuff when I did mine, but none of the stores I went to had even heard of it. I guess it was fairly new at the time.

do you have a pic of it in the car? I gave up on modifying a bezel because I couldn't match the color.. then I gave up on using the stock navi bezel because no screen really fit it.
