Clutch advice

Recommended Posts

Hi fellow NEders,

I have been driving my with my clutch which started slipping about 5 months after I bought it in January. I cad drive it each day, but I am about ready to finally get a new clutch, and I can afford it.

I have read about the ACT Stage 1 clutch plus WRX fly wheel.

I am stage 1 Cobb with a longer stability bar in the rear. This is my daily driver, I do 60miles minimum a day, and I want to drive the car for a long time. I might go stage 2, but I want to upgrade the brakes first; I have been unhappy with some sudden stops on the highway.

So am I better of with an OEM clutch set-up or an ACT clutch plus WRX flywheel? Especially for Mass Greater Metrowest driving conditions. Also who do you recommend for an install. I have used Speen Street SUbaru in Framingham for 30K service.

Thanks.

dont know if this will help or not but......

i had same sort of thing happen so i replaced the oem clutch but got the lightened fw then i went stage 2.5 (up/dp/cat-back,fmic,typhoon intake tune....now it slips under full throttle and i only put about 20,000 on the clutch...........so im getting an upgraded clutch only 6 months later....which sucks but i didnt think i would mod that soon and now im stuck buying another clutch

The ACT will hold up nicely for you and drives very near stock. Maybe 5-10% firmer pedal with nice engagement. You could get OEM and it should be fine at stage 1 depending how you drive. But for the cost you should just go ahead with the ACT. You could also go with SPEC if you want to keep a dual mass flywheel.

Personally I've been very pleased with my ACT clutch (SB5-HDMM) and 06 WRX Flywheel (PN: 12342AA090)

Most likely his problem was too much power for the stock clutch.

I do drive aggresively, so I do put pressure on the clutch. I would eventually like to get to stage 2. I just have to take care of the suspension and brakes first.

I have read a lot of good reviews of the ACT clutch plus WRX fw. It sounds like once in awhile they send out a dud and those poor customers have a lot of trouble. Does this combination hold up under stage 2 then?

Thanks.

I'm in the market for a clutch, too... I've babied it since last fall... and still could for a while longer, but with the colder weather finally here (esp. at night when I do most of my driving) it makes my clutch slip in 5th and now almost in 4th, too... in the summer I really experience almost no slippage! I can drive fine with out slippage most of the time, but I'm getting ready for a busy ski season and lot of mileage... so it's time to ACT. huh huh... I guess I'll go with the ACT... but which stage?

Anyone have some suggestions...

Yeah... I don't even want to begin talking about street cleaning... my car has been towed twice now! I just this month got my registration changed to Southie... but I still have no sticker and I get tickets all the time... it sucks!

I think I drove by your car today... on E street... silver 2.5 NA with stock spoiler???

I have been crazy busy as of late... just got married in October, moved from the North Shore to Southie (even though I pretty much lived there now for a while) moving jobs in my company and so on... I'm finally now having time to think about winterizing the Leggy! I'm still rolling on my summers because I haven't had a chance to change over to winter set!

I work from 2-10:30pm, so if you want to meet up some time on your lunch break... if you can... just let me know!

Nice list of mods, although not sure what most of them have to do with your clutch.

Anyway as for which "stage" ACT clutch take a look at post #4. Great set up for a stage 2 LGT.

Ha ha... Good point! I just have a word document of my mods list... I guess I could have gotten by with just listing the power mods... but I'm sure there are some people that might be able get a better depiction of my clutch needs from looking at my entire car mods list... besides... I have a relatively stock powertrain... but my car is far from stock, wouldn't you agree?

BTW... SubaruAA - sorry for the threadjack!

Have you figured out what you are going to do and where your getting the work done!

I for one know where I am going to get the job done- Fastrack Automotive in Peabody! They do great work and have plenty of experience with clutch work on the current generation legacy!

No problem. Finally getting back on this. Life was swamped; still is :-).

I am going to order the parts, thanks Han'sGT.

I work in Framingham which is why I was looking at Speen Street Automotive. Any recommendations on them? I will call Peabody to see if they can do a loaner.

No problem on the threadjack. I live in East Boston and parking is always great fun...

Speen Street is a great shop and they have done a ton of work for me over the years. They do provide loaners. I would check out dentsport garage in Norwood. They have much more experience with an aftermarket clutches than Speen Street and there is a good chance they will be cheaper on the labor. According to their website, a subaru clutch job is priced at $500. They will not have a loaner for you though. Glad to see you're still enjoying the AP.

Hi Hiroller,

Enjoying the AP big time even though I have needed a new clutch for awhile. I will probably upgrading my brakes as well, and may still look at one more suspension upgrade before I go to stage 2. I am a guy that enjoys the 'looks like a family wagon, runs like a porsche' of this car. Stage 2 will probably the ultimate destination, but I am impressed by what some have done.

Actually about to by the Iphone outlet cable the guy on this site advertized.

Thanks for the heads up about Norwood; I definitely want to make sure it is done very well.

Thanks.

Well, $2,200 for new clutch, flywheel, 60K service, I can think about stage 2. I could have saved ~400 on parts if I had bought better. Next time and thanks for the advise. The DSG guys were cool.
