Guest Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 The car's underbody comes from factory covered with some rust proofing goo. I noticed that it rubed off in few spots likely due car being put on garage lifts. I'd like to fill in missing spots - does anyone know what to use?
kenchan Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 yah, undercarriage/sound eliminator sprays sold at autoparts stores. it's very similar to that sticky black mess from the factory.
Danase Posted October 30, 2008 Posted October 30, 2008 I don;t think that rubber stuff you buy from the parts store is the same stuff. The automakers usually use something more similar to a rhino liner like you'd find in a truck bed.
BrownBoy Posted October 30, 2008 Posted October 30, 2008 I'd be interested to find out what this stuff is also. The undercoating is flaking off the rear wheel wells of our Forester. By any chance you think SOA would cover this under warranty? We have the 7 yr, 70K on the vehicle...
Danase Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 No way Subie would touch that under warranty after that long. Maybe if it was 5 years because their paint is warrantied for 5. This stuff is used by a lot of hotrodders. http://www.lizardskin.com/pages/ceramic.php
whitetiger Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 subau has underbody coating as a recall for the BE chassis. if you go to the dealer you can get a bottle of it.
Bdubs Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 I'd try this http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=26344&title=RUST%20VETO I've seen this mentioned in a few other car forums with some positive reviews.
mwiener2 Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 The sticky goo on our cars is called Cosmoline. If it's just a few spots no larger than a half dollar, I wouldn't even worry about it. My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons
BigBad Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Rubberized undercoating from Eastwood is what you want if you can get the factory stuff. I've used it on different cars I've owned and its excellent bar none. I have the spray gun and wand for applying it.
mwiener2 Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 If you decide to use a different product than cosmoline....you'll have to completely remove any remaining cosmoline or it won't adhere properly to the car. My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons
Guest Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 subau has underbody coating as a recall for the BE chassis. if you go to the dealer you can get a bottle of it. Thanks for the tip! Getting one from KOP. The question will be how to apply it...
Guest Posted November 2, 2008 Posted November 2, 2008 Spray gun is how the techs would do it. More details please? Does it need to be heated or something prior to application?
z28dreams Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 Don't forget about corrosion-proofing the rest of your car also. I spray Corrosion Block all over the engine bay - particularly the battery terminals. I got hooked on this stuff because my parents have sold it for years and it's always done an amazing job of keeping the Mercruiser engine our ski boat super-clean. If anyone wants a discount, mention LegacyGT.com and I'll have them give you 10% off a can. http://www.nocorrosion.com/cart/ (mods - if this is inappropriate let me know - I'm not sure what the vendor rules are for this forum, but I just saw this topic and thought it might be helpful to people)
