bushbelay
1996 Legacy wagon, 5 spd, 98,000 miles. If the car is cold, there is a knock while accelerating in first and second gear. The knock is absent in the other gears and/or if the car has been run for 30 minutes. The noise seems to be coming from the passenger side around the half shafts/transmission area. Boots are not torn and half shafts look solid. The knock does sound similar to a worn half shaft. It does not sound like it is coming from the engine. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. jonklein611
brake shield rubbing on the rotor?
bushbelay
That is a spot I could look. But why is it occurring with the lower speeds/ lower gears? The noise is a deep, throaty noise. I wonder (and worry) could it be something with my clutch?
jonklein611
I have zero experience with the MT's, as mine is an AT. could be, maybe a wheel bearing? If it's only when accelerating, could be the trans / motor mounts are worn / loose, or something like that. I know mine clunks when pulling away a certain way, but I've ID'ed that as the tranny smacking the limits of it's mount.
Reuben
pop the bonnet, and try find it. Is it there when you rev? or only when you're driving? Or even only while turning? is it a knock, tap, rattle or clunk?
bushbelay
The noise is only when I am driving. It occurs if I am going straight or turning. It is a knock. It only occurs when accelerating in first and second gear.
