RustyShackleford
Ok, just got the Yokohama H4S put on my car. Three people besides me involved: tirerack.com, my mechanic (who takes it to a neighboring tire place he really likes), and the tire place. Tire guy said he thought there was a "bump" on one tire. Mechanic said he didn't really feel it when he brought car back to me. I think I feel it, especially when braking. What should I do ? First, I'm gonna talk to tire guy and see how much "bump" he thought he saw (and why the heck did he mount the tire ?!?) and which tire it is (a front one, I imagine). Then what ? Tirerack I guess. Will they send a new one so I can easily exchange out ?

RustyShackleford
Did you buy road hazard? No. They're brand new. Not that road-hazard might not be helpful in this situation.
G.T.Subie
Did you call them, they are pretty good with customer service. Denial is your best friend
PeterJMC
Call Tirerack. They will work with you on getting a replacement. I've dealt with their customer service before and they were pretty easy and pleasant to deal with. They actually called me back when they said they would! RustyShackleford
Any vibration on the freeway? Haven't driven there (or that fast) yet. Did call Tire Rack and they were VERY responsive, said new tire will be here Friday. Wanted VIN# of car, which seemed odd. I will go out to tire shop with new tire, get the guy to show me the fault, and put on the new one. I fear the fault won't really be there, meaning 1. Tire Rack will say WTF when they get it back, and 2. Something else is wrong. I'm a worrier ...
gianspi
In all honestly your tire guy shouldn't of mounted the tire if he found a defect. The only thing between you and the pavement is your tires! enough zip ties and duct tape will fix anything.
vet
^ In addition to the tire, I've usually got at least a layer of underwear between me and the pavement
Dergara
If the bump is on the side wall it might be a faulty tire. TireRack will probably replace it where as not to take a chance with a liability suit. Also check the DOT date on the side of the tire to make sure it is not an old tire you were sold. Just a thought. “Abandon hope, all ye who enter here” -Dante Alighieri http://youtu.be/lLFunBPgPOo

The only thing between you and the pavement is your tires! Should I have driven out on three tires ? Ok, I suppose he could've put the old one back on that wheel, but then there's the issue of differing circumferences. But yeah, I'll ask him about that when I take the new tire. SBT
Glad they responded promptly and correctly. Don't worry about sending the tire back. All you really need is a statement from your tire guy that there was a bump. Remember, you're not the expert in tires AND you're a worrier... more than enough reason to trust your tire guy. - Pro amore Dei et patriam et populum -

You're saying tirerack doesn't care if they get the bad tire back, as long as the tire guy says it's bad ? I find that really hard to believe. Maybe if the tire guy was one of their "recommended installers" or whatever they call it ...

That should be good enough for Tire Rack. TR should welcome a bad tire back, as it reduces their liability and keeps good product flowing to the customers. - Pro amore Dei et patriam et populum -
RustyShackleford
So this story indeed had a happy ending. As I mentioned before, Tire Rack promptly sent me a new tire - no questions asked. Finally managed to get to the tire place today, and they quickly located the tire with the "hop" (there was some confusion about which one it was) and replaced it while I waited. Apparently this "hop" was not an out-of-round spot, but rather just a really (unacceptably) heavy place (along the circumference of the tire). Of course, UPS are being their usual piggish selves about picking the old tire up. Some b*llshit about the driver should have made three pickup attempts and not just left the prepaid label with me, so they were gonna have to charge me $11, which I quickly let them know was not gonna fly ... P.S. For those in the ChapelHill/Durham area of NC (I gather I'm far from the only one), the installer was the Tire King on LaSalle St in Durham. I thought they were awesome. Just sitting in their lobby for 30 minutes I got a vibe of folks who really care about customer service and doing the job right - I found it eerily incongruous for today's America, yet pleasing ...
