New easy map light mod = More light!!

I was finishing up the maplight mod from this thread and noticed that the light coming out of the front maplights was being blocked by a grey panel with only a small hole in it. I realized I could cut the hole larger than the factory and more light would come out of the maplights and at a broader angle. I understand that they have a little magnifier lens molded into the clear lens, but why block all the light? Anyhow, I cut out the grey panel a little larger and now the light is brighter and has a broader pattern. I happen to have a Laser engraver, so I used that to cut the hole in the plastic, but you can use a dremel and get the same results.

How about removing that piece completely? I do think the point is though to have a focused beam on only one person, like an airplane.. They just did a crappy job with those lenses. Perhaps a little steel wool to take out the frosting.
You can't remove the grey plastic part, because it has the hooks on it that connect it to the map light housing, and the lens snaps to it. There is no frosting. The lens has little bevels all over it. Yes, I understand that they were trying to focus the light, but the majority of it is still focused and extra light is let out to the surrounding areas. With the plastic part cutout and only one map light on, it will light up both sides, but of course brighter on the side that's on.

I like the idea of more light, but as you say, it lights up both sides...

I wonder how it would look if one cut a larger hole than the stock one, but using the inboard edge of the existing hole as a border, and just enlarging from front to back, and outboard of the existing holes. Would the remaining plastic block a little more light from the opposite side of the car?

I rarely if ever use the driver's side map light. Sometimes my wife uses the passenger side light, though I and I like it in my truck, where the light can be on, and her side is lit enough for her to read, and the bulb is not in my sight line while I am driving. Part of that comes from having the light in the center of the roof, rather than at the front, near the windsheild, though.

Yes, I that would work. I put some electrical tape over the passengers side map light on the side that is toward the driver and right on the edge of the magnifier and it does make the light stop at the center. Also it keeps the light from shining in the drivers eye. It doesn't bother me that it shines in my eye a little, but if I had to do it over, maybe I would have cut it a little shorter on that side.

Nice mod laser-boy!

Thanks. After running out to the car and putting electrical tape over the passengers side that got me thinking that if anybody does this mod, maybe they should cut the passengers side a little short, so that it doesn't shine in your face, but cut the drivers side full open. That way you get the most light without distracting the driver. I'll have to see on a trip when my wife turns on the maplight if it bothers me enough to add a little piece back in or get a new cover and try again.
