My car came in, what to expect

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm new to Subaru's and this past December, I just ordered a 2008 Subaru Legacy GT finished in Quartz Silver Metallic. The dealer called to say that my car just came in and I'm going to the dealership tonight to look at it.

What should I expect with this car as far as pre-delivery? I know its a broad question but what are the break in procedures if any?

Any information you can provide me with will be much appreciated.

Break-in procedures - Go easy on the clutch and brakes. Vary speed on the highway (i.e. don't stay at one speed for more than 3 minutes at a time). I wouldn't redline it, but I would gently take it up in the rpm range. That's my take.

As far as pre-delivery, the car should be somewhat detailed with no markings on it left from the window sticker or plastic protective coverings. The interior should be immaculate. Look over it carefully for dents and scratches (silver really hides this, so be careful).

Congrats on the big day!

Joe

I have broken or helped brake in in 3 turbo motors and 7 n/A performance engines, i find its best to take it easy for about 200-300miles and then just drive like you normally would, race when you would drive for MPG when you would. I kept my first supra engine that i dropped in under 4,000rpms for 2kmiles did an oil change and then the second day i used it for racing, bam, blown head gasket, cylinder 3 and 5 have burnt up the rings. Luckly the engien was under warrenty from jasper racing, so i got the exact same one and that engine i broke in by just driving, it lasted atleast 30kmiles, 30k may not sound like alot but you must remember the engines im talking about i used for strickly track passes and hard street racing, rarely do i just drive around in those cars. Sometimes i do on nice days but that just makes me bust out the camera and do stupid things in cars that I video tape lol dumb i know.

Welcome to the family!

Regarding break-in; I would read in the manual for what they recommend for break-in. I know everyone has a theory, but few theories are back by the Subaru warranty. Even Cobb Tuning, well respected Subaru specialists, have a break in procedure that is not much different to that of the factory procedure; it can be seen here: http://www.cobbtuning.com/info/?ID=3475

Love your car everyday, wash it frequently, stay away from drive through car washes, and don't forget it is now required to change you oil at no more than 3750 mi. per Subaru, due to failing tubros.

I think you got the best color too!;)

Read the owners manual from cover to cover before you leave the dealership.

I've had my car for almost 2 years and have not done this. To each their own...

Sarcasm or not, reading most of the info in there would help decrease the number of the "Hey, I just discovered SRS mode on my stereo!" posts

What to expect:

Shitty tires

Shitty wiper blades

A dash rattle up by the drivers side

HVAC controls that suck

The DRL's connected

Rao compiled a list about 2+yrs ago, but that thing is probably buried deep. But nonetheless, enjoy it!

OBAMA......One Big Ass Mistake America!

I'd look at the car in daylight if possible. It'll save you headaches later.

My previous car had come off the carrier dented, and once I drove it off the lot, the dealer said there was no way to prove it didn't happen somewhere else.

I have a new 08 and my HVAC controls are fine and i have no rattle's. Guess the guys in indiana must have been sober the day they built mine :)

+1, but I do have the spec B, and those are know to be the best of the best, cherry picked off the line for the transformation.

Mine had no dents fortunately, but theres some sort of smudges on the drivers door that look like they could be polished out.... I hope. It also had some imperfections on the kickpanels... Oh well. I would have probably added them pretty quickly myself anyway.

My dealer sucks BTW.

Do not go over 5,000 rpm unless absolutely necessary.

Buy a top up oil and check oil every 3 days or so when the car is warm and has been left standing for about 5-10 mins. The car will consume the whole bottle before your next service.

Use the right fuel.http://legacygt.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif

And also, congrats man.

yea but from what I have heard elsewhere they aren't making the 3.0R's anymore so my car is more rare :) plus its a black one which they made the least of, double :)

ok no more hijacking the thread. Pretty much just drive how you would normally drive is what I was told. Dont redline it every time and I htink you'll be alright. With all the advances in engine technology the break-in period for cars is little to minimal in amount of miles to drive from what I have seen in jeeps, fords, and now my subaru.

My HVAC works fine, but the dash and trim does rattle in places, pretty annoying.

The owner's manual states to stay under 3000RPM and avoid constant RPM for the first 1K miles or so.

I just stayed in Intelligent mode and that helped. Plus it made S# that much more fun when I finally used it.

I did blatantly ignore the "avoid constant RPM" part, having driven nearly 2K miles in the first two weeks of ownership.

Enjoy the car! I just bought a QSM '08 as well.

I would like to thank EVERYONE who responded to my questions.

I'm very excited about the car and I went to the dealership yesterday to look at it. That short throw shifter seems a little notchy compared to the Civic Si that I have as well. That will be up for sale soon to purchase a good used truck.

As for the car maintenance and keeping the car clean, I'm VERY anal when it comes to that and will respect both Subaru's break-in procedure and your opinions as well.

Again, thanks again.

Pete
