Looking at getting an LGT

Hello my name is Bill. I live in MN and have been a member of MNsubaru for a few years now. I currently have a stage 2+ 02 WRB WRX.

I am looking at buying an 05 to current LGT. I have just started my search and I found this place. So at the risk of being flamed for starting a new thread with repeat questions, I hope to have a long and fun time here. Thanks in advance for the help.

What do I need to know?

What years should I stay away from?

Manual or auto?

Things to look for when test driving?

anything else you can think of.

Thanks

Bill

I'm by no means an expert like some of the other folks on here, but here's what I can share...

I only looked at '08 LGT's because I wanted a new car, full warranty, and all the enhancements that were made to the '08 edition (although not horribly significant...). There are also great deals on '08 models, so you should be able to find one at or below invoice and with a $750 rebate. Mine had an MSRP of $29.3 and I drove it off the lot at $26K.

To me, the decision between manual or auto was easily made by driving the two.

Good luck in your search! I'm very pleased with my LGTM.

- What do I need to know?

Lots, A few things that come to mind is the "stutter problem" Some stutter when hard acceleration, it can be fixed with a dealer reflash or an Access Port and stg I tune, not all have it, by 06 doesnt... 05s had the best color options. in 06 some colors couldnt be had with the black leather, im not a fan of toupe.

Starting in 06 though they released a Spec.B model, which I have. New it was priced heavily above the regular LGT but used they can sometimes be had for little more than a regular used LGT of equivalent condition. For 06 the spec.b got red leather seats, navigation with the 5 speed, 18" rims instead of 17s, Bilstien suspension and a few other goodies. it is not more powerful, same engine setup. in 07 and 08 the Spec.Bs got the 6 speed manual from the STi, which many people like. 07 and up all the legacy GTs got the SI drive which some report came as a decrease in performance stock for stock. in 07 the spec.b got blue suede seat and door inserts, in 08 the inserts were black.

the stock tires on the LGTs SUCK, just how it is

05 was the only year the wagon was offered with a 5 spd

Wing or not to wing?... some people love the stock wing some people hate it, it is a factory option and if you dont like it and it has it, theres holes in the trunk, it can be added at a later date, as well as many aftermarket lip spoilers. Mine has the wing I like it ill post some pics of mine

unless you get a custom tune, anything but a drop in filter will cause you to run lean and wont help you out

the stock radio and AC are one integrated unit and an aftermarket radio is a bit dificult, HCA has a thread on here for around 700 bucks they seperate the circutry and give you a single or double din slot for an aftermarket radio, they will also be doing a stock radio hack where they will add RCA preamp outputs for 400 bucks in the upcoming months

the radio is a 6 CD changer but can be switched out with certain outback CD players giving you a 6 CD mp3 player

Ill add more but thats a pretty good start

- What years should I stay away from?

there werent any lemon years, depends on what your looking for, 05 seems to be the largest production year and can be had for a good price usually, lucky for buyers of used LGTs they depreciate quickly and then plateu

i dont know much about it but some curse the SI drive that became part of the car 07 & 08 models

not sure which but 07 or 08 they added the split folding seat instead of just the rear armrest pass-through

- Manual or auto?

really a personal decision. for the wagon only 05s offered in manual.

navigation only offered in 06 and up and only manual trans with nav are the spec.b's

if your into modification any manual lgt can be fitted with the 6 speed MT from the STi/07-08 spec b

- Things to look for when test driving?

stutter in acceleration, rattles in dash

- anything else you can think of.

you wanted new car for warranty... all cars have 36,000 mile bumper to bumper and 60,000 powertrain from factory

any used LGT bought from dealership, you can purchase the 100,000 mile powertrain or bumper to bumper for 1 to 2 grand.... if your going to mod got to watch out certain mods dont void warranty work if your going to get the warranty... If you buy it from the dealership used you can even come back at a later date and purchase the 100,000 mile warranty. I opted not to get it as I have 27,000 miles on my car. I can go back and get it at any time although if i purchase before my 36,000 miles are up it will probably be cheaper than after.... but you dont have to get new to have a warranty, just have to buy from a SUBARU dealership...

heres a few pics of my 06 Spec.B is the same as any other LGT accept for the stuff I listed before, I cant see paying the higher sticker price but i picked this up for only 2 or 3 grand what i would have paid for a regular 06 LGT so i said why not...

I have a 2005 sedan with an automatic. It has been at stage 2 (305hp/340ft-lb) for about 25,000 miles and currently has 38,000 miles on it. I have had only one serious problem. I had a wheel bearing go out. It was replaced under warranty.

I do have a problem with my low beam headlight bulbs burning out every few months. There are lots of owners with my same problem. Here's a link to that thread. http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12570

Here is another forum you may want to browse around in. http://www.legacygt.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=48

This car has been a good one for me. I don't know what to tell you about getting a manual or an automatic. I guess that depends on whether or not you drive in stop and go traffic often. I was just tired of shifting gears, and I drive in stop and go fairly often. This is the smoothest shifting automatic transmission I've come across though.

Car looks good CTATV.

thanks, it was actually really dirty for those pictures but i had only had it for 3 days and I had to get some decent pics before I went back to college. I have it up here but I just don'tlkm have a camera... I love it. just went out for a nice drive today. cant wait for better weather to have it all shined up. it has been on and off drizzle here for 3 days and looks like it will continue for another week...

That didn't work for me. I blew a low beam bulb, just 3 months after disabling my DRL's.

They still burn out, it just takes longer. If you really want to solve the problem, spend 155 bucks and buy an HID kit from the vendors here. I know people that have had them 3 years with not one bulb burning out

If you haven't bought that car already, DO NOT PAY anything over $17500 for that car! Anything near $21,000 is waaaaaaaay to much.

you know what sucks.. the same car if sold in CA would I bet go for $3K-5K less.. but as soon as it hits the North East it's almost up to $20K... Demand or no demand I think the prices should be leveled.. It's so one sided for the price of a 2005 limited I might as well look at a newer model.

I did find one thats a limited and a nice price Now time to wait for the income tax to roll in.

Nope, the only region where Subies go for more is NW. Prices in NE despite Subaru popularity/demand are on the lower side of the spectrum.

$21k for the car OP is asking is joke. Brand new were going for $22-24k or less.

I wish I could see that... I was just effin around one day and I was putting in some west coast zip codes and I was like wow they are almost $4K cheaper for the same amount of miles the car has here.

Just don't give in to stealership's tactics.

And, btw noone in his right mind should pay over $17-18k for a used 05 LGT regardless how low mileage. Would have to be in perfect shape to command such a price anyway.

Brand new 08 LGT can be had for $26k.

What about an 05 Limited? I found one at a good price but it's been sitting for awhile however it's out of sate about 128 mi from here.. best price I've seen since last year.

Who knew you had to bust your @ss just to lower the price..

the car I saw was about $4K cheaper

What year did Subaru start offering Xenons on the Legacy? Are they standard on all Spec Bs?

1-3-2-4... please tell me that color LGT in your avatar is available somewhere

I don't think THAT blue is available in the USA. Hopefully I'm wrong. That's my favorite color for the WRX. Although, I drive silver because it still looks good when it's fairly dirty.
