Thanks for that, Denver.

SA and SY - that's pretty cool....can't wait to see how it turns out. Just a matter of time until that dream is realized, I think, too.

Wow on the Dell! I think my company has a realtionship with them and offers a discount, too.

^ My school/business discount barely comes close to that price. Still a bit off. I wish I had a Sam's Club account.

Getting the Acer 8.9" off the Buy.com deal. :) They have the blue one, for the same price. Thanks, a.a.

^ I'd love to hold out, but my patience is wearing thin, bruddah. And getting mad at my old "garage laptop" just isn't worth it, nor is constantly HAVING to plug it into the inverter, for datalogging, doing my sanity any favors (cost for a replacement battery would have been about half the price of the Acer Netbook above). :)

Even if those deals come just a few weeks from today (I made the jump this afternoon), I still won't regret this purchase.

Besides, it'll be easier to sneak porn off into the bathroom with this little thing, rather than a full-sized laptop.

don't want to say how much I paid, but got it the week it came out. So I definatally got ripped off, but my old router died and needed one that day.

Those mini laptops sound like a great idea.

My wife's desktop is getting VERY old and we are looking at replacing it with a laptop so she can take it with her to school or work.

The mini looks like you don't get an optical drive.... other than that it would probably do most everything she needs.

It will run MS Office right?

Email, Web, Pictures, MS Office and CD drive would do it....

sure would like to save the money and it would be easy to travel with....

and which DELL model is HOT right now.... PINK MINI

Check out the Eee 1000HE; probably the hottest Netbook right now. Most netbooks do not come with a DVD/CD drive. But you can always get an external usb drive for under $100. I believe the Dell Mini 10 that is going to be released shortly, may have a drive but it is priced pretty high from what I've heard. Most netbooks come with a 60 day trial of Office, but not much more. Myself, as well as a couple other guys oner here, have placed our pre-order for the 1000he.

And just an FYI; if you do go the HE route, J&R still has the pre-order special, which is $365 shipped, plus 6% back if you go through MS Cashback; so you'd get a rebate of about $22; making the total $343. Right now this is the best deal on it. They will most likely ship somewhere in the next 2 weeks.

Currently on the market, there are no Netbooks with a DVD drive (you'd have to go external). I've come across some cheap laptops that are in the $400 range that would have DVD drives; but they are bulky and you would essentially double the weight of the HE.

If your only reason for needing a DVD/CD drive it to install software you can simply use a desktop copy the sofware from the CD/DVD to a to a USB drive and install if from the USB drive on the laptop. My friend just used this method this weekend to install Office 2007 on his Dell Mini 9.

Or do what I do with all software. I copy all the CD contents to a drive that is avaiable on the network. From the computer you need the software installed, all you have to do is connect to that computer and run the install. I would say that it works 95% of the time. Most installers give you a choice when there is multiple disks to choose the path and if it asks for the additional disk, just point it to the folder for that disk, instead of the actual disk. I have been doing this ever since windows 3.11 days.
