CRacerX125
I'm doing this in a '99 Subaru Legacy. Extremely simple to do, but it just took me forever to figure out what I had to do first. Hope this helps some people 1. Unscrew the two bolts located directly underneath the rear seat. There is one on each side. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w65/CRacerX1252/000_0702.jpg 2. You will now notice the seat is being held on by a bar. The bolt can be found in the middle of the seats, in a crack. It's pretty easy to spot. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w65/CRacerX1252/000_0704.jpg 3. Once that bolt is out, push the seat in, and pull it out so it releases the seat from the bar. (No picture of this because I couldn't really demonstrate it in a picture) 4. Unscrew the two bolts holding in the seat. These are located near each of the rear doors. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w65/CRacerX1252/000_0707.jpg 5. Put both of the seats down by pulling the lever. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w65/CRacerX1252/000_0709.jpg 6. Lift the seat up near each of the head rests. Once you lift each side up, the seat will come right out. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w65/CRacerX1252/000_0710.jpg 7. Now you should have both of the seats taken out in the back. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w65/CRacerX1252/000_0711.jpg 8. Pull on one end of the cardboard piece so you uncover the rear speakers. Be sure to be very careful and not to rip any of the stuff off under the cardboard! http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w65/CRacerX1252/000_0713.jpg 9. Simply unscrew the screw with the corresponding screwdriver. You are most likely going to have to use a short screw driver because the glass is going to get in the way. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w65/CRacerX1252/000_0715.jpg 10. Hop in your trunk and pull the two wires out of the speaker http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w65/CRacerX1252/000_0718.jpg 11. Simply lift the speaker up and out. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w65/CRacerX1252/000_0719.jpg 12. Plop the new speakers in. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w65/CRacerX1252/000_0721.jpg 13. Re-plug in the two wires that you disconnected in step 10. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w65/CRacerX1252/000_0724.jpg 14. Screw in the new speakers. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w65/CRacerX1252/000_0726.jpg Now your new speakers are ready to go! To put all of this back together, simply follow steps 1-8, but only backwards. I hope this helped some people

ejkjd
Just found your post about replacing speakers. Excellent. Thank you very much. My son and I got the rear deck off and removed the old speakers but the new ones don't sit right in the hole. It sits up too high, and th screw holes don't line up. I notice that you have a spacer ring under your replacement speakers in your photos. This would solve the problem I think but doesn't it raise the speaker up so high that it interferes with sliding the rear deckback into place? Where can you get such spacers? Thanks. Yeah, you're going to need those spacers to fix your problem. It has been a while since I installed those speakers, but if I remember correctly they actually came with the new speakers. If your speakers did not come with these, any car audio store should carry these. And to answer your other question, no, the spacer does not cause any problems with clearance issues. It's a close call but all still works flawlessly!
Who1657615253
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Helped me out with doing the same thing in my 98 LGT. By any chance have you replaced the speakers in the front doors of your car? Im looking into doing that next but need to know how to remove the door panels. cman7
Just like the others have said. Thanks! Very helpful. My Rear drivers side speaker just blew and it's given me an excuse to upgrade. I'm glad I don't have to do any guessing work now that I've found this. Thanks again!
CRacerX125
Sorry everyone, I have been away from my computer for quite some time! Who?, I have messed with the front speakers numerous times. Do you still need that guide? I could get one up in a matter of hours. ryderx, sounds fun! hahahaha loz_james, thanks bud! Subaru cars generally take a standard 6.5" speaker all the way around. cman7, glad I can help! It's always a pain to mess with something for hours not really getting anywhere Also, if anyone would like a guide for the deck installation, I would be more than happy to provide one. hamzter
This is cool... I am glad you did this. Other wise today would have been a long day. I just did my front speakers, um half way. I just installed factory tweets, but replaced the 6.5" door speaker with a 6.75" driver. Also, I am hoping my factory sub will keep up... if not, I'm gonna do an Infinity bass link and call it a day. I may do a video for that one... maybe. thanks again.
jantzen8895
I'm going to definitely use this soon when i replace my rears. Thank you for doing this. Does anyone know how to remove your front seats? For cleaning and what not?
98-lgt
How do the speakers sound? And what do you have for front speakers/deck?
stevenva
I did that on my Legacy...Twice. The second time was to install padding between the fiberboard cover and the metal rear deck. The subwoofer in my trunk was causing it to rattle. The best padding to use is actual headliner material. (it's thin and pliable) A tip for screwing in the speaker when the holes don't line up. Use a tool called a SKEWDRIVER attached to a cordless drill and use self tapping screws.http://www.autotoys.com/x/product.php?productid=9300 Home Depot Or Lowes have them for $30 RIP 96 Legacy 2.2 4EAT lost reverse @ 374,000 miles
