RE50A OEM Replacements

Bad day yesterday. Friggin' NYC potholes made me want to SCREAM!!! I hit one hard at night with my passenger-front. Couldn't see it coming - very unusual. I ruptured a small hole in the sidewall and now have to chuck the front tires with only 4500 miles. Ugh!!! Makes me want to sue the City! It wasn't even really a pothole but a "cut" made for some kind of repair that wasn't properly filled in. I hit the far end dead on perpendicular at the worst possible angle. Must have been about 5 inches deep. I'm so pissed.

Anyway, I'm looking at Tirerack and they have 2 RE50A's for slightly different prices. What's the diff???

Not to throw gasoline on the fire but why just the front? You either replace the one affected tire if wear is close(search for exact spec) or entire set on an AWD Subaru.

With under 5K miles? The tires or nearly brand new. I've never heard of such a thing other then replacing pairs (front or back). Is this for real? Recommended?

Yes, it's real. Read your owner's manual. All the tires in your car must be within a specified range in circumference...sorry, but I can't remember that number, or else your differentials/tranny will suffer. It could be somehting like 1/4 of an inch in circumference or less, but check the manual, it's in there. So you either change all 4 tires, or buy 1 new tire form TR, measure the circumference of your remaining tires to see if it is within spec, and if not, have TR "shave" your new tire to match the old ones. The former is of course more costly than the latter. I hit a couple of nails and decided to change my 4 tires at once (the crappyness of the re92 also swayed me to change them). However, the re50 are pretty good tires by most accounts.

I'm in the same boat but I just wore my RE050a's out.

The second link you provided is for OEM tires for our (that are currnetly $175 from tirerack). I believe the difference is a load / weight rating for the tires but I'm not sure. If you plug in your subaru's information, it will designate those tires as the OE replacements.

At 4500 miles, I'm thinking you should be okay. AFAIK, the fronts wear a little quicker than the rears, so if you avoided rotating for a while, eventually they should catch up.

Re the difference in tires, look at the weight ratings. That's usually the difference between otherwise identical-appearing tires.

Having said all that, you still might want to look to new tires. You can fit a new set of Falkens, Hankook Z212s, or Toyos sized 225/40/18 on stock Spec B rims for not all that much more than two new RE050s are going to cost.

Then you can ebay your RE050s.

Just measure the tread depth on the remaining tire/s and get one RE050 from TireRack shaved to the correct depth. This would be your cheapest choice for RE050's AFAIK they can shave as little as 2/32 - 3/32 off.

Well, being that my dumbass "experimented" with the Bridgestones in the snow this past winter and had several near-death experiences, I opted for Pirelli Pzero Neros all around from Tirerack. After about a week, I'm very happy with them. I don't "push" my car to extremes often, do auto-crossing, etc. I wanted a high-performance, all year tire that won't necessarily do what my Suburban can do, but that also won't leave me fearing death come the lightest snow.

I bought my Spec B in January and drove it through the winter on the RE050a's and even at full thread they were dangerous (maybe not dangerous, but definitely not the environment they were designed for). This winter I bought a used set of aftermarket 17" and Dunlop Wintersport M3's and it's been almost boring driving around. I just ordered a new set of RE050a's for my car and they should be here Wednesday.

It's definitely not the cheapest option but if you spend a lot of time in bad weather, a set of dedicated winter tires and wheels is a nice thing.
