CA car emission regs in MD

vet

Recommended Posts

The CA gas stations used to sell 93 octane until the latest round of state mandated fuel reformulations. MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether) was added to limit emissions. MTBE also has a habit of finding its way into the ground water supply.

SO, California is moving to a gas/ethanol blend and decided to standardize the fuel supply at 91 max until after the transition to the new fuel is complete.

i doubt this will change much except to make the cost of cars higher and pave the way to get rid of 93 octane (which would suck). for performance enthusiasts there is no impact. you can still remove all emissions equipment and pass emissions as long as you don't throw a cell while you're being tested.

Heard John Davis of Motor Week discussing the significance of the proposed law on TV the other night. He said by the time it takes effect in 2011 it wouldn't mean much since most vehicles will meet those regs anyway. CA is now trying to regulate CO2 which would require higher fuel economy standards so if that reg makes it into law then it might be a real disadvantage.
