vet Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Sounds like its a done deal starting in 2011. So what does this mean for car enthusiasts?
Jedi Pimp Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Its probably good news for car enthusiasts. More cars will be sold than trucks. Hope they keep the 93 octane though.
vet Posted February 25, 2007 Author Posted February 25, 2007 I thought CA regs were tighter hence some cars sold in CA had less power and some cars weren't certified for sale in CA at all.
sgt Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 I wonder how bad it will get. where did you read this?
vet Posted February 26, 2007 Author Posted February 26, 2007 It's been in the news a couple of times in the last month. I think it's all but passed the legislature and O Malley has signaled that he will sign the bill.
Jedi Pimp Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 Some cars like diesels aren't permitted at all. Other than that, most cars sold today are 50 state legal, LGT included. But if we get stuck with no 93oct, then tuning is limited to 91 swill.
vet Posted February 26, 2007 Author Posted February 26, 2007 Is there a logical rationale for different octane availability (91/93) in various parts of the US?
Jedi Pimp Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 The CA gas stations used to sell 93 octane until the latest round of state mandated fuel reformulations. MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether) was added to limit emissions. MTBE also has a habit of finding its way into the ground water supply. SO, California is moving to a gas/ethanol blend and decided to standardize the fuel supply at 91 max until after the transition to the new fuel is complete.
rexster Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 i doubt this will change much except to make the cost of cars higher and pave the way to get rid of 93 octane (which would suck). for performance enthusiasts there is no impact. you can still remove all emissions equipment and pass emissions as long as you don't throw a cell while you're being tested.
Jedi Pimp Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 ^^^ NO way. Northern VA is the land of speed enforcement and no radar detector crap. Last time I was on I-66 I had a police escort thanks to my Borla exhaust.
vet Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 Heard John Davis of Motor Week discussing the significance of the proposed law on TV the other night. He said by the time it takes effect in 2011 it wouldn't mean much since most vehicles will meet those regs anyway. CA is now trying to regulate CO2 which would require higher fuel economy standards so if that reg makes it into law then it might be a real disadvantage.
rexster Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 Cali is due for a huge earthquake any day now, maybe we'll get lucky.
