ogradnis
For those who have done an UP install themselves: - Did you use a flex pipe or solid pipe? - If you used a solid pipe; would going with a flex have made the install easier? - If you went with a flex, has the flex cracked/split or given any other problems? jim1969
flex for less leaks.
jazzymt
The install makes no difference at all, but I went with a solid UP and fixed the leak 3 times before finally going with a flex. Fogetabboutit - go flex if you don't want it to leak. jazzymt
It doesn't hurt to revisit the issue as some of us still feel the need to learn the hard way...I don't know why... You can also get integrated header-up and forget about the joint that leaks altogether (what I finally did). captainmorgan
I've had a Perrin solid up in my WRX for 2 years with no leaks, and now I've had the same one in my OBXT for a year with no leaks.
whitetiger
I voted flex, but IMHO, a properly installed solid UP wont leak.
mickeyd2005
I think that a set of headers plus solid uppipe will have enough flexibility to allow the flanges to tighten up flat. Headers are more flexible than the stock exhaust manifold. Also, when installing both an up and headers, you can tighten all the nuts finger tight first and then torque each nut a little bit at a time. There are always mfg tolerance buildup. Look at how many pieces and joints there are between the header exhaust and the turbo inlet. Even the position of the OEM exhaust manifold can shift slightly so it doesn't surprise me that some people have exhaust leaks with a solid uppipe and some don't. ogradnis
This may be a repost...but did the original have the super-awesome poll attached? Lets be honest. It's the poll that makes this thread:icon_redf So, what's a good name in flex pipes? Turbo XS is the one I'm thinking I'll get. It's certainly one of the more expensive ones. rc0032
Moved to the correct forum There has been polls about this Turbo XS is under $200 and one of the cheaper ones.
ogradnis
I stand corrected. So in this case, does less expensive = poor quality?

BoxerGT2.5
TurboXS, no probs for 6mos. Don't ask me about my previous UP. Just pick the one that looks the prettiest. jim1969
Honestly, if your going to do the up-pipe, just do headers and be done. get gt spec type that has a 3 bolt up-pipe to manifold connection and you should be leak free. I just made the switch from a solid up-pipe to this set up. I wish I would've done it before. I have the Mad Dad V2 headers which were put on last night.
