hey guys,

here is a little report i gathered for you guys with some pics. Manville i looked for you at the JL booth a few times, but everyone was all in meetings hehe, did bump into eldridge and i heard a bit also about the new project ;)

Please note a few things:

1. i didnt have much time to wonder around, was meeting and greeting at the DLS booth 90 percent of the time. so i am sure i am lacking a MANY pictures of a few things, a lot of things i didnt have my camera with me to snap

2. I didnt have time to visit the pioneer or the alpine booth, so please dont ask :)

3. The report represents MY opinion, and i am not saying its fact, i try to be as neutral as i can in my report, so please dont get upset if i didnt include something you really liked in it ;)

okay lets get started:

General Impressions: First of all, i think having CES on weekdays is not a good idea, the dealer traffic was a bit lacking compared to past years, though we did have a decent turn out with Norcal guys :) THis year i woudl characterize as a relatively quiet show, not too many huge things, but enough to keep people interested.

The general lack of SQ cars was disappointing, i had wish to listen to at least a handful of cars from the Finals, such as Gary Biggs... 99 percent of the casr are wild show cars, while they are nice to gawk at, most of them are NOT set up for SQ (infact any car with a ton of painted glass is pretty much not an SQ car ;)), so they cant really show off how good their stuff sounded except to get loud. a few SQ cars there i did listen to were nice, but not hte knock your socks off types, most of them were what i would consider very good daily driver SQ cars, i.e. stock locations, decent tuning etc etc.

------------------------------

Best SQ cars:

I honestly think that with out any prejudice, the two cars at our DLS booth are hands down the best sounding cars at the show. Not surprising considering their accomplishments.

Yellow Beatle from Slovenia - winner of EMMA (european sq comp) expert unlimited class, and best of entire competition.

This car is a different beast than most american Sq comp cars, in that it snot an overpowered beast, but the tonality, detail, staging and imaging was phoenomenal. The attention to detail was also mind boggling. I think the europeans and Asian guys really had us beat when it comes to attentoin to detail, while our guys can spend a few hundred hours molding a beautiful enclosure, these guys can spend a few hundred hours custom CNCing and polishing their own SPEAKER GRILLE!

run down of equipment: NObelium tweets uptop, dual nobelium 5.25s on the reconstructed dash, one midbass, one midrange, single iridium 10 in the front passenger side under dash, DLS tube amps, one one each pair of midrange and tweet, dual mono on the midbass and sub.

there are simply way too much detail to list, you really have to look over every inch of hte install to appreciate the attention to detail, down to the last smallest seam, screw and switch

The BMW 5 series from Thailand - 2006 Iasca world champion in Pro Ultimate, 2006 Iasca world champion in ISQC

Now this is more of an american style of sound, whcih means power power power! the dynamics of this car is astounding, and the composure at whcih it goes about its buisness is also quite something. overall, both of these two cars makes me sad that even wtih similar equipment, my own car sounds like a jukebox compared to them :(

Equipment include: dual nobelium 6.5" midbass in isobaric enclosures in EACH kick panel! driven by 900 watts per side. 6.5" midrange on the reconstructed dash, and twet molded off the sail panel, both powered by tube amps. an iridium 10" sub in in the dash, instead of making the Dual 4ohm sub into a 2ohm and running an amp into it, its run by TWO dual monos amps, over 500 watts into EACH voice coil, so the sub gets over 1k watts but at the highest damping rate possible.

the install was also quite something, the flames molded on the side of hte car is not to everyones liking, but honetly, taking into account the car is from Thailand...i think it is unique in its own way reflecting its own culture. the trunk also features one of the most impressive looking power distrubtion displays i have every seen, the steering wheel is a billet piece yet somehow has integrated controsl fro the stereo that is barely noticable until you look close. solar panel on the roof to charge the batteries...on and on, its very hard to appreciate the entire car, I chatted with him for an hour and hardly began to scratch the surface of all the details..

unfortuantelly i was so busy talking that i didnt get pics of the car, but i am sure there are plenty floating around

the morel and focal cars also sounded good, but the focal car honestly to me, didnt seem to be tuned all that well...for as radical as it is on the inside i expect a bit more, maybe the fact that the person demoing the car to me had no idea what to do had soemting to do with it. clarity and detail wasnt up to par, and the songs that were played did not reflect the imaging well...beautiful install of course.

THe image dynamics Scion sounded good for a daily driver type of install, dynamic, solid placement, good tonality even wtih the eq on flat (impressive for a horn car)

More impressive show vehicle install:

since i didnt see the alpine car, the JL audio car wtih subs for steering wheel is IMO the most impressive show install at the show, i looked through the car from nose to tail, could not spot any obvious issues, the execution is perfect, the uniqueness of the steering wheel sub is awesome. just awe inspiring htat people can do work like this :)

the big convertible (caddy?) in the Direct booth caught my eye as the most impressive exterior, it had nothng to do with sound but catching the 20 some foot long on the ground in its awesome paint job was...just awesome! I wanted to climb into the bed and stay there for hte rest of the show :)

Most impressive amplifier:

two amps, which are alsot he two most expensive amps on display were IMO the most impresive amps.

the 6000 plus dollar Genesis amp

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/ces9.JPG

and the 4000 plus dollar Audison amp:

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/ces25.JPG

simply magnificent construction inside and out, and even me, with very little eletrical engineering background, can apprecaite the beautifully laid out board and top notch components. kudos!

most impressive Speaker:

the honor IMO goes again to genesis with their top line 6-7k comp set, the construction and presentation is flawless... i wish i can hera a set of these in a car sometime soon being they are based close to me :)

other notables:

the eagerly anticipated IDQ version 3 was in its protype form, and i am liking it a lot. new basket makes the sub a lot more cosmetically appealting from the bottom side (good for reverse mounting), counter sunk mounting holes that are moved to the outter side of the radius is a great touch for installers. improved excursion while retaining the same small box performance!

JL 6w3, looks to be a nice improved version of the 6w0, a lot better cosmetics for sure:

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/ces13.JPG

Focal amp that you can plug a computer into and tune? (not that sure cause all the focal guys were talking to others while i was there)

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/ces26.JPG

the 2000 dollar 12" sub from critical mass does indeed get loud, the big truck had two of htem off 2500 watts, and when i sat in the car it wasily went over 150 db...though i didnt have the chance to sample their sq...

HANDS DOWN THE WORST INSTALL at the show:

i am not going to count the crappy slap it togehter installs at some of the very low end booths, but this car, at a high end booth with good name behind it, was by far the worst, i am NOT going to name names, but i think anyone who took a remotely closet look at it will agree:

here is a sampel shot of a piece of trim in the car, i dont think i need to say much about the issues with just this one panel...the rest of hte car is the same...sad...

avn show started today .

Pioneer booth was ok. they had a custom pontiac solstice and the usual Scion TC.

best thing there was their new digital turntables that let you mix video. it was tight.

Alpine booth is a must visit for the tricked out car of the year.

ill post pics of their new car later.

I hate the big swoopy fiberglass filled trunks. Seems silly..always thought so, even back when I did it for a living. a tight, well thought out and cool looking install always looks better. sometimes, making it look like it belongs is 100x harder than the stuff you see above.
