Helping Soldiers, past and present.

If you are having a good year and wondering where to donate, here are two organizations that really make a difference.

The New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans has helped thousands of former servicemen get their lives back on track. Based in boston, it has become a national model and has been trying to expand their services.

New England Caring for our military has shipped over 15,000 packages to deployed troops, relying on donations and volunteers.

Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan face unique pressures, since they have to operate in the middle of a civilian society. Many do not have the kind of family support network that traditionally supported them overseas. Even a small donation helps a lot.

Many families don't have support, either. They're invisible and largely ignored. They also don't have missions to focus on, just everyday life while being scared to watch the news. I don't know of any larger organizations to recommend, but these folks can tell you how you can help your own neighbors. Neighbors who just spent Christmas fearing for their loved ones' lives.
