stanjk3
On the wife's car, '95 Legy with the 2.2L, ~158K miles. I can see something leaking on top of the left side of the engine, in the area behind the power steering fluid tank. There's a sensor behind it and near the center, from what I can tell that's where the leak is coming from. What sensor is this and how tough is it to replace? Oil level is fine, coolant level is near the low mark but not below it. Coolant is green, and no foamy residue in the oil that would indicate a head gasket problem. stanjk3
Anyone?? Took another look at it, it's probably not the sensor. From what I can see, on the left side there's a hose from the radiator that connects to a metal "pipe" that goes into the top of the engine. You can't really see it as the intake manifold blocks your view. Any idea how expensive it might be to fix that?? Friends don't let friends drink cheap beer. Only getting ~17mpg. Used to get around 20, though the cold weather doesn't help. Friends don't let friends drink cheap beer.
schwartzki
My dad who is a master tech, said that it lookes like a coolant leak from a hose but its impossible to tell without being upclose.
stanjk3
My dad who is a master tech, said that it lookes like a coolant leak from a hose but its impossible to tell without being upclose. Thanks. If you look at the 3rd pic, you can see a hose coming from the top of the engine (intake manifold) that curves and goes striaght down into the engine block. Is that a coolant hose? It looks like it's leaking but I'm not sure what it's leaking. Friends don't let friends drink cheap beer.
B2.5GT
I bet it's you P/S pump leaking, I've seen quite of few subaru p/s pumps leak. That sensor next to the p/s pump is a oil pressure sensor that detects the oil pressure and they almost never leak at least I never saw one leak. Check you power steering fluid see if it's low, it could be some seals are leaks very slightly, these pump can be resealed or you can buy a used or new one. But with out seeing this in person I can't tell for sure. Hope this helps...
B2.5GT
Also try to tightend up the upper radiator house they can leek sometimes after a coolent flush or replaced radiator hose. If the coolent is green then you can try to get a black light and shine it at the spot see if you can see it glow, it helps to see with yellow glasses. Good luck
stanjk3
Update: Turns out it's the head gasket. Suprisingly, even the tech suggested it's not worth fixing. Not gonna spend $1300 on a car with 159K miles. Any idea how long the engine will last? Friends don't let friends drink cheap beer.
gianspi
2.2L? Forever. If your mechanically inclined you could replace the HGs for about $80 worth of parts. enough zip ties and duct tape will fix anything.
etcetera
I have the same situation, 1998 2.2L Legacy L,. 147K miles Apparently leaking coolant externally onto the left hand side of the engine. doesn't seem to cause any harm to anything? Only accumulates enough when seats for a week, not seen in day to day driving. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x260/dictum9/auto_subaru/leak1.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x260/dictum9/auto_subaru/leak2.jpg

How much time and effort does it take? I might do that this summer then.
autoboty2k
That is your power steering pump leaking, think about it, why is it red? Subaru uses atf for powersteering fluid and how is coolant going to leak upwards? I work for Subaru and have never seen coolant on top of the engine from headgaskets. It defies the laws of gravity unless your car is upside down.
